Nairo, rey en Los Lagos

29 de agosto de 2016 | Cangas de Onís - Nairo Quintana firmó este lunes en los Lagos de Covadonga -10ª etapa de la Vuelta a España 2016 (189 km)- una de las mejores páginas de su ya excelente carrera deportiva. Con el apoyo de un soberbio Movistar Team, el colombiano inscribió su nombre en el palmarés de la cima asturiana y regresó al liderato de una Vuelta a España que ya comanda con casi un minuto de ventaja... sobre su compañero Alejandro Valverde. El murciano, 5º en la cima, volvió a demostrar que la experiencia y la clase que atesora no tienen parangón y sigue en la brecha tras dos Grandes Vueltas y media entre los mejores.

El conjunto de José Luis Arrieta y Chente García Acosta -que sufrió una caída, sin consecuencias más que golpes (en codo, cadera y rodilla) y rozaduras, del propio Quintana junto a Rory Sutherland, en el km 10- tomó el mando a unos sesenta kilómetros del final, con el inapelable dúo Rory - Imanol Erviti martilleando en el llano previo al Fitu (1ª) y en los kilómetros de acceso a los Lagos para, con ayuda final de Jonathan Castroviejo, llegar a pie de ascensión a dos minutos y medio de la fuga del día. 'Castro', José Herrada y un sensacional Rubén Fernández seleccionaron el grupo con grandes golpes en la primera parte de subida, hasta que un cambio de ritmo de Contador (TNK) decretó el inicio de la batalla entre favoritos a 6 km de la conclusión.

Los dos ataques de Nairo -uno para dar respuesta a Contador, finalmente a un minuto en la llegada, y alejar a Froome; el otro, en busca de la etapa con Gesink (TLJ) ya a la vista- le hicieron llegar a meta con 23" sobre un Froome (SKY) que, descolgado a inicio del puerto, fue recogiendo víctimas hasta alcanzar a Alejandro Valverde, siempre a su ritmo, y acercarse sobremanera al colombiano de Movistar Team, que con su victoria -acompañada del tercer rojo de líder de su carrera y de la Combinada; el 'Bala' ya es 1º en la Regularidad- eleva a 33 el casillero de los azules en el presente curso 2016.

Con 58" sobre Froome en la general, Nairo deberá seguir batallando en la segunda parte de carrera para mantener altas las diferencias. Mañana martes, él y todo el cuadro telefónico disfrutarán en Asturias de un merecido descanso. 

DECLARACIONES:

Nairo Quintana (vídeo): “¡Esperamos que esta vez sí sea un maillot para mucho tiempo! Lo vivido y sentido en el día de hoy ha sido precioso y me da más confianza para seguir luchando este maillot. Ha sido una jornada de buenas sensaciones, al margen de la caída del inicio. El gran trabajo del equipo se notó y me dio aún más ilusión para brindarles la etapa. Siempre había soñado con ganar aquí y hoy pude hacerlo. Me llena mucho dejar mi nombre en esta montaña tan bonita y, sobre todo, cómo lo hicimos, junto con el equipo. Sin ellos no hubiera podido.

Me he visto bien, veía que veníamos pocos gracias al fuerte ritmo que han puesto los compañeros, sobre todo Rubén Fernández. Nos ha facilitado mucho las cosas. Cuando veía que ya se le acababa el gas a Rubén ha atacado Alberto (Contador), le he seguido yo y he arrancado de nuevo en dos ocasiones para intentar abrir distancias con Froome y buscar la etapa. Chris sigue muy cerca de cara a lo que viene. Tendremos que seguir haciendo lo que hemos hecho hasta ahora: movernos para alejarlo más. Si lo dejamos llegar con ese tiempo a la crono de Calpe, sigue siendo favorito. Calculo que nos harían falta unos tres minutos para llegar tranquilos.

Se siente bien ser líder. Siempre he confiado en mis capacidades, pero unas veces estás mejor y otras, peor. Ahora que me siento mejor, disfruto y vivo todo con mucha ilusión. Lo importante para mí en este momento, dedicarle este triunfo a mi familia, en especial a mi madre. Siempre ora, reza por mí para que me vaya bien. Un saludo para ella, la amo, es la mejor madre del mundo. Y también va por mi equipo, por hacerme llegar a cumplir estos sueños que estoy logrando. No va solo por los de la Vuelta, sino por todo el grupo en general. ¿Mañana? Seguir entrenando un poco en el día de descanso y tratar de recuperar del golpe de la caída”.

Alejandro Valverde (vídeo): “¿Los Lagos? Me dejan cansado (ríe). Es un buen sabor de boca. Ganar la etapa con Nairo, estar yo prácticamente con Froome… súper contento. Yo me estoy sorprendiendo a mí mismo. Es mi tercera grande, ya con 10 etapas en el cuerpo seguidas, muy duras… y ahí seguimos. Estoy ‘disfrutando’ de la bici, entre comillas porque sufrimos mucho. Los resultados acompañan, estamos dando espectáculo y espero que estén disfrutando. Ojalá sigamos así.

Yo sabía que Froome venía por detrás muy rápido, y con el ataque de Nairo me he abierto para coger mi ritmo y me he quedado con Rubén, que ha marcado un gran ritmo. Iba conservando algo de energía para cuando llegase Froome, que al final y con todo su ritmo solo me ha sacado 3”. Froome sorprende pero no sorprende: se queda, iba perdiendo casi 40”, pero remonta a una velocidad espantosa. No es la primera vez y sabemos de la enorme calidad que tiene. De cara a la general, este minuto delante de Froome para Nairo no es mucho, pero queda mucha montaña por delante. Quiera Dios que sigamos aumentando la renta”.

GESINK SECONDO NELLA DECIMA TAPPA DELLA VUELTA A ESPANA L'olandese al comando fino a due chilometri dall’arrivo in quota di Lagos de Covadonga

Treviglio (Bergamo), 30 agosto 2016 - Robert Gesink del Team LottoNL-Jumbo ha recitato un ruolo di primo piano nella decima tappa della Vuelta a Espana, 188,7 km da Lugones a Lagos de Covadonga, piazzandosi secondo lunedì 29 agosto. La vittoria è andata a Nairo Quintana, mentre sul podio alle spalle di Gesink (giunto a 24") si è piazzato Christopher Froome, staccato di 25". Protagonista di una fuga di 16 uomini assieme al compagno di squadra Victor Campenaerts, Gesink si è portato solitario al comando della corsa sull’ultima salita con Oltre XR4, dopo aver ripreso Louis Vervaeke e staccato Pierre Rolland. Solo il dirompente recupero di Nairo Quintana ha privato Gesink della vittoria. L'olandese non è riuscito a tenere il passo del colombiano, ma non ha ceduto, ed è riuscito a terminare davanti al vincitore dell'ultimo Tour de France Froome nella sfida per il secondo posto. Vuelta a Espana #10: Omar Fraile courageously rides to 4th and Mountains Jersey lead Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka rider puts in gutsy performannce to pull on the King of the Mountains jersey Nairo Quintana (Movistar) won the 188km stage 10 of the Vuelta a Espana, climbing to the stage win and the overall lead on Lagos de Covadonga. Robert Gesink (LottoNL-Jumbo) was 2nd on the stage and Chris Froome finished in 3rd place.   The first big summit finish of this year’s Vuelta a Espana turned out to be an exciting race and a terrific day for Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka. After a big battle to find the break of the day, Omar Fraile, our Basque climber was able to infiltrate the 16 rider lead group that went clear after 70km's of racing. Movistar and Etixx-Quickstep kept close tabs on the breakaway, but the gap was still able to reach the 5’30” mark. While the 12.2km Lavos da Covadonga was the big finishing climb of the day, riders would also have to deal with the 6km category 1 Alto de Fito at 42km to go. When the big lead group began the first climb, the peloton was just 3’20” back but Fraile had one immediate target, and that was to take maximum King of the Mountain points at the summit. Fraile attacked the group just inside of a kilometre from the top and Luis Angel Mate followed our Basque climber. A 2nd effort just before the line saw Fraile secure the 10 points on offer at the top. Fraile and Mate began the descent together as the chasers started to pull back the 25” gap the leading duo had opened up at the top of the climb. It was only in the valley between the two big climbs where Fraile and Mate were brought back into the fold. Once the break was all back together though, the cohesion ended as a number of riders started to skip turns. This resulted in the peloton bringing the gap down to just 2’30” by the time Fraile and co. reached the foot of the Covadonga. A few early accelerations from the break saw Fraile dropped and it was thought, this was the end of his day. Pierre Rolland (Cannondale-Drapac) and Gesink were the two riders who then led the way up the climb from the break but the peloton, being led by Movistar, was closing in fast. With 6km to go the attacks from the favourites group came as Quintana and Alberto Contador (Tinkoff) surged ahead of the rest. Their acceleration brought them up to the wheel of Fraile who then latched on to the wheels of the two favourites as Gesink now led the race alone, 45” up the road. Incredibly, Fraile was able to hold the wheel of Quintana and Contador as they went on to catch and pass the majority of the breakaway that had left Fraile behind at the start of the climb. Quintana then attacked Contador and Fraile with 3km to go and this was just as Froome came back into contention from behind. There was no catching Quintana though, he went past Gesink who was snapped up by Froome & Fraile in the final kilometres as well. Fraile crossed the line in 4th place, a great result in its own right but his efforts today also saw him take the lead in King of the Mountains competition. Omar Fraile – Rider The break took a really long time to go away today. For 70km it was just attack after attack, it was very fast and a difficult start. When we finally went away it was easier and then in the final I had a good feeling. I knew my form was good so I was just being patient and riding a good rhythm. When the favourites came, it was possible to hold their wheel. I am really happy with this ride as I could move into the climber’s jersey which was the goal I had for the day. The jersey gives me good motivation which I will take into the next stages. Meintjes entra nella top 20 della classifica generale Meintjes enters in the top 20 of the general classification 29 agosto 2016

La 10^tappa della Vuelta a Espana, 188,7 km da Lugones a Lagos de Covadonga, ha chiuso un trittico di frazioni con arrivo in salita. Le due ascese di giornata (Alto del Mirador del Fito, 1^categoria, -40 km; Lagos de Covadonga, hors categorie) non hanno intimorito i corridori del gruppo e la tappa si è aperta con molti tentativi di allungo. Per la LAMPRE-MERIDA, che due anni fa a Lagos de Covadonga trionfò grazie a Niemiec, Arashiro aveva trovato lo spunto giusto per evadere dal plotone con altri quattro alteti dopo 36 km, ma l'azione del quintetto è stata neutralizzata dopo 5 km. Nonostante una serie di cadute (nessun atleta blu-fucsia-verde coinvolto), la media della prima ora di corsa è stata superiore ai 44 km/h, fattore che non ha consentito la nascita della fuga buona prima del 65° km di gara, quando 16 ciclisti hanno avuto il via libera per passare a condurre la tappa. Il vantaggio massimo di 5' non è però bastato ai fuggitivi per evitare il ricongiungimento del gruppo, avvenuto lungo la salita finale, nella quale si è assistito anche alla battaglia tra gli uomini di classifica. Non ha potuto purtroppo lottare in maniera attiva per un risultato di spicco Meintjes (foto archivio Bettini), sulla via della ripresa dalle conseguenze della caduta occorsa nei giorni scorsi: lo scalatore sudafricano si è difeso, arrivando al traguardo con 2'18" di distacco dal vincitore di tappa e nuova maglia rossa Quintana ed entrando nella top 20 della classifica generale (20° a 6'40"). The two ascents of the race (Alto del Mirador del Fito, 1st category, -40 km; Lagos de Covadonga, hors categorie) did not scare the riders of the bunch and the stage started with many attempts of attack. LAMPRE-MERIDA, who obtained two years ago a stunning victory in Lagos de Covadonga thanks to Niemiec, was represented by Arashiro in a breakaway of 5 riders which had a maximum advantage of less than one minute before the peloton neutralized their action at 41st km. Despite a series of crashes (no blue-fuchsia-green athletes involved), the average speed of the first hour of race was 44 km/h and it prevented any attack to went clear. Only after 65 km in he race, 16 cyclists formed the main breakaway which led the race until the final climb. On the way to the summit of Lagos de Covadonga, the top climbers battled for the victory, unfortunately Meintjes (photo Bettini archive) could not be protagonists being still recovering from the consequences of the crash in which he had been involved in the past days. Despite this, he succeeded in limiting the gap from the winner and new red jersey Quintana to 2'18" and this result made him enter in the top 20 of the general classification at the 20th place (+6'40").
