Durasek in fuga, 9° nell’arrivo in salita

Durasek attacks and he's 9th in the summit arrival

7 settembre 2016

After the second rest day, the cyclists who're participating in the Vuelta a Espana faced a summit arrival.

The 17th stage of the Spanish race, which started from Castellon and finished in Llucena Camins de Penyagolosa, at the end of a 1st category climb.

Once again, there were the blue-fuchsia-green colors in the group of attackers which led the race since the 36 km: Kristijan Durasek (photo Bettini archive) went clear with other 27 riders after the descent of the first categorized climb of the course (Alto de la Sarratella, 2nd category).

The front group had a maximum advantage of 8', before the gap began to decrease after the passage on the climb of Alto de Benasal (3rd category, 68,3 km to the arrival), however the advantage was large enough for Durasek and the other breakaway members for avoiding the neutralization of their action and for battling for the victory on the final ascent.

The Croatian cyclist from LAMPRE-MERIDA was until -1500 meters in the group which was chasing Franke, who had attacked on the final climb and had some meters of advantage on the former brakaway mates.
Franke maintened the advantage and he won the stage, Durasek completed his good performance obtaining the 9th place (+1'02").

The blue-fuchsia-green team will be at the start of the 18th stage with 7 riders, because Mario Costa did not finish the stage because he was suffering for the fever.

Quintana detained the red jersey.
