Ewan wins stage 5 of the Vuelta a Espana in debut Grand Tour

21-year-old Caleb Ewan has won stage five of the 2015 Vuelta a Espana in his debut season and Grand Tour.

Ewan capitalised on a perfect lead out by his ORICA-GreenEDGEteammates Mitch DockerMathew Hayman and Jens Keukeleireon what was tough uphill drag to the finish line.

In the process, the neo-pro got the better of ten-time Grand Tour stage winner John Degenkolb (Giant-Alpecin) and four-time Tour de France stage winner Peter Sagan (Tinkoff-Saxo).

“This is by far the happiest day in my career,” Ewan said. “To beat some of the best sprinters in the world, especially guys like Sagan and Degenkolb on an uphill finish, it really means a lot to me.”

“It’s an honour to race with those guys and to beat them is just unreal for me.

“It was a super tough finish, but my teammates did an awesome job of getting me to the bottom in front position. I even had time to stop back a few spots and that always makes it easier than trying to move up. If it wasn’t for them, there is no way I could have won today.”

Team LAMPRE-MERIDA

Grmay, leone in fuga alla Vuelta

Grmay, lion in the breakaway at the Vuelta

26 agosto 2015

Tsgabu Grmay Gebremaryam was one of the protagonists of the 5th stage of the Vuelta a Espana (Rota-Ronda, 167,3 km).

The Ethiopian national champion honored the race in the best possible way, escaping from the bunch 4 km after the start flag had been waved.
The jersey of the Ethiopian champion led the race for 155 km, together with Keisse and Duchesne, who had joined Grmay after few kilometers.

LAMPRE-MERIDA's climber and his breakaway mates had a maximum advantage of 7', unfortunately the peloton reacted and intensified the chase, which was completed at 10 km to the arrival.
The stage was won by Ewan in a sprint on a light hill (Richeze 54th).

Tsgaby Grmay (in photo Bettini, followed by the team car Mitsubishi Outlander with tyres Kumho Tyre), who's racing his second great tour in his career (during this season he already completed the Giro d'Italia), was the fourth LAMPRE-MERIDA's rider who joined the main breakaway of the past 4 stages (he was preceded by Oliveira, Koshevoy and Durasek).

Dumoulin is the new leader of the overall classification, Cattaneo is 54th.

"I was one of the cyclists of the team who had received the task to try to join the breakaways - Grmay explained - In the early kilometers of the stage there was a series of attacks and I tried too to escape from the peloton: I had good legs and I could obtain an interesting advantage, then I was joined by two other riders and the gap of the bunch increased.
It would have been necessary to be more than 3 attackers for avoiding the chase of the peloton, even if my two breakaway mates were very strong on the pace: in the final part of the stage, I suffer the high pace on flat roads, who are not my preferred terrain, also because there was the front wind blowing.
I'm happy I succeeded in achieving the goal of joining the breakaway, but I want to try again on the mountains stages, where I'll have more chance to battle for a top result".
