Kristian Sbaragli nets breakthrough win at La Vuelta stage 10

Louis Meintjes keeps good GC position

Kristian Sbaragli once again proofed to be on form when stage 10 of La Vuelta a Espana came to conclusion today in Castellòn. The 24-year-old Italian powerhouse rode himself into perfect position over the last kilometer to finally beat John Degenkolb (Giant-Alpecin) and José Joaquín Rojas (Movistar) into second and third. This win marks Kristian’s first ever triumph in a European UCI race.

With only 146 kilometers to cover and a second-category climb 16 kilometers from the line the race was set to be hectic. There were numerous attacks and it took quite a while until a group of 14 took off. MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung was represented in this break with Tour de France stage winner Steve Cummings. Nevertheless, Giant-Alpecin and Trek had different ideas in mind and kept the group in sight. With 45 kilometers to go the escapees were reeled in.

After that the team played a waiting game to stay in contention. No other attack was meant to be successful. Kristian rolled over the climb in about 20th position and managed to hold it together on the fast run-in to Castellòn. Placing 6th twice and 3rd once in the last nine days he waited long to open his sprint. With 200 meters to go he left it all on the bike to celebrate a breakthrough win, the second Grand-Tour stage win for our team this year.

Louis Meintjes rode strong as well and kept his good overall position. He still sits 12th in the GC.

Kristian Sbaragli – Rider

I was feeling really well on the climb and just didn’t want to miss out again. I came so close a few times already in this La Vuelta, so I decided to wait until 200 meters to go before leaving it all out there. It’s sensational, something I never tasted before. This win is good for our team, but especially for Qhubeka and our 5.000 bikes campaign.

Jens Zemke – Head Sports Director
It’s unbelievable, a milestone performance for Kristian. He rode really well in the first couple of days, but felt disappointed after his near misses. Today he did everything right and managed to get the team’s second Grand-Tour stage win this year. It’s a great moment for us as a team.

Conti 10° al termine di una tappa movimentata

Conti 10th at the end of a lively stage

31 agosto 2015

The 10th stage of the Vuelta a Espana, la Valencia-Castellon of 146,6, ended the first week of the Spanish race.

The course was short and with two climbs, the 3rd category one of Puerto del Oronet after 23 km in the stage and the hill of 2nd category of Alto del Desierto de las Palmas, whose summit was at 17 km to the arrival.

The fact that the first stage was so close to the start promoted an intense battle which generated a large breakaway of 41 riders, which however did not had a large advantage.
The peloton controlled the action and the attack was neutralized at 60 km to the arrival, before that the climb of Alto del Desierto de las Palmas selected the bunch, reducing it at 57 riders, including the blue-fuchsia-green athletes Conti, Durasek and Oliveria.
The Portuguese time trial champion tried an attack at 3,5 km to go, but the group reacted and it approached the sprint at full speed: Conti (photo Bettini) faced the sprint with determination and he succeeded in recovering positions until his front wheel was touched by the bike of Montaguti, who had had a contact with another riders.
Conti could not overtake other riders and he obtained the 10th place; victory for Sbaragli on Degekolb and Rojas.

The Vuelta's leader in the first rest day of Tuesday is Dumoulin.

"Another one stage in which we raced in the front of the race and in which we were competitive until the end - sport director Vicino explained - Our cyclist with the best qualities to obtain a top result was Richeze, but unfortunately we were not able to give him the best assistance which could have helped Maximiliano to close the gap to the head group after that he had reached the summit of the last climb with a small gap".

Castellon (Spain), August 31st, 2015 Stage ten of the Vuelta a España (Valencia-Castellon, 146 km) seemed poised to be won from a break. Instead, once again the many attempts to get clear from the bunch were unsuccessful, so the day ended up with a sprint, won from a group of around 60 riders by Kristian Sbaragli (MTN-Qhubeka), ahead of John Degenkolb (Giant-Alpecin) and Jose Joaquin Rojas (Movistar).

The riders of Team Colombia-Coldeportes tried more than once to go into a breakaway: Carlos Julian Quintero and Rodolfo Torres were part of a huge group of 40 cyclists who escaped on the first climb of the day, Puerto del Oronet, but having the likes of Sergio Henao (Team Sky) and Daniel Navarro (Cofidis) there – both important men in the GC – meant that the group’s chances of succeeding were doomed. A little bit later, Leonardo Duque tried his luck together with Niki Terpstra (Etixx-Quick Step) before the second category ascent of Alto del Deserto de las Palmas, but once again they didn’t get green light from the peloton.

More attacks came on the final climb, but Giant-Alpecin controlled the situation and the peloton was all together with 10 kilometers to go. However, the German failed to capitalize on his favourite status and launched his sprint too late, thus allowing Sbaragli to land the win. Despite of that, his team can still be happy, as Tom Dumoulin enters the first rest day of the race wearing the leader’s jersey.

Alex Cano, 63rd at the finish, was the best placed rider of Team Colombia-Coldeportes today: “This rest day comes at the right time" – said sports director Valerio Tebaldi. - "It will help the cyclists who were hit by a virus or involved in a crash to fully recover. Wednesday, when the race resumes, we will be very motivated to fight again”.

Ripartiremo mercoledì motivati a dare battaglia.
