LA VUELTA A ESPAÑA - STAGE 17
ONE LAST BREAKAWAY
BEFORE ENJOYING

Victor Lafay and José Herrada accompanied Guillaume Martin in today's breakaway. The leader of the Cofidis team took the opportunity to score some extra points, as he was already assured to remain the best climber of this Vuelta. Tomorrow evening, the riders will take off for the last stage of this Vuelta in the streets of Madrid.

After more than 10 kilometers, Guillaume Martin went on the attack together with José Herrada. The two men were part of a group of 32 riders. Then two other riders joined them, among them one of their team-mates: Victor Lafay. The young Frenchman continues to improve on his first big Tour of his career.

Three more Cofidis riders in the breakaway

The breakaway then increased the gap and Guillaume Martin managed to get some more points by passing in the lead at the Portillo de Las Batuecas.  The three Cofidis riders then remained in the leading group on the next 4 climbs. On the last climb, Guillaume Martin stayed for a long time in the lead, before being overtaken with less than 4 kilometers to go. He finished in 7th place, his 6th 'top 10' of this Vuelta.

After a long and tiring day, the Cofidis team is heading for the Spanish capital. Tomorrow, they will take part in the last stage of the Vuelta, 139,6 km long, which should end in a massive sprint. After that, Guillaume Martin will take the podium as best climber of this 2020 edition, a beautiful way to finish this very special season.

GUILLAUME MARTIN SAID...
"I kept the good habits by being in the breakaway again. It was my 7th breakaway in 18 stages on this Vuelta. It's not bad but maybe a little bit too much to be successful at the end of the race and really aim for the stage victory. Considering the results, this omnipresence at the front is really important and allowed me to take the jersey of best climber. But I also think that in the future, I will have to focus a little bit more on the stages and keep myself safe in order to aim for stage victories. We have been riding very fast all day and we have worked well together with José and Victor. On the final climb, I didn't want to put too much pressure on myself. But I tried and I think this is the most important thing in this Vuelta".
