I velocisti presenti alla Vuelta a Espana non si sono fatti sfuggire una delle rare occasioni offerte loro dal percorso dell'edizione 2016 della corsa spagnola.
La 2^tappa, 160,8 km con partenza da Ourense e arrivo a Baiona, si è conclusa infatti con una volata di gruppo (foto Watson/Bettini) nella quale non ha esitato a lottare Yukiya Arashiro, velocista della LAMPRE-MERIDA: il corridore giapponese ha tagliato il traguardo in 15^posizione, mentre il successo è andato a Meersman.
Dopo il via, i corridori si sono diretti a ovest, percorrendo 60 km di pianura puntanto verso l'oceano Atlantico prima di affrontare l'unico Gpm della tappa, l'Alto de Fontefrìa (3^categoria, scollinamento a 80,1 km dal traguardo).
A condurre la tappa sin dal 7° chilometro è stato un trio di attaccanti composta da Pichon, Benedetti e Naulleau, arrivati ad avere un vantaggio massimo di 4'25".
Prima del ricongiungimento (-14 km) e della volata finale, solo il sussulto del contrattacco di Gilbert a 40 km dal traguardo, poi spazio alle squadre dei velocisti che hanno condotto il gruppo fino allo sprint.
Con Zurlo tagliato fuori dai giochi per lo sprint a causa della caduta di Lagutin ai -2 km che lo ha rallentato, è toccato ad Arashiro difendere i colori blu-fucsia-verdi nella volata.
Il corridore nipponico si è mosso sulla scia dei treni dei velocisti e ha impostato una volata di rimonta, dovendo anche scartare ai 100 metri per evitare un contatto, e trovando il 15° posto.
La maglia rossa passa sulle spalle di Kwiatkowski.

The sprinters of the Vuelta a Espana did not miss one of the few appointments suitablr for them which the course of the Spanish race will offer in 2016.
The 2nd stage, 160,8 km from Ourense to Baiona, finished in a massive sprint (photo Watson/Bettini)in which Arashiro battled for LAMPRE-MERIDA: the Japanese cyclist obtained the 15th place, while Meersman celebrate the victory.
After the start, the bunch pedaled towards the Atlantic Ocean for 60 km of flat roads, before approaching the only categorized climb of the stage, the Alto de Fontefrìa (3rd category, summit at 80,1 km to the arrival).
A trio of riders (Pichon, Benedetti and Naulleau) led the stage from the 7th km and they had a maximum advantage of 4'25".
Before the bunch bridged the gap at 14 km to the arrival, there was a counter attack of Gilbert, after which the sprinters' team took the head of the peloton and led it to the massive sprint.
Being Zurlo out the head positions in the approach to the sprint because of the crash of Lagutin at -2 km which slowed the Italian cyclist, it was Arashiro's turn to bring the blue-fuchsia-green colors in the sprint.
The Japanese rider exploited the stream of the sprinters' trains, tried to recover positions launching himself from behind and he could cross the finish line in 15th place, despite he had to drift his trajectory in order to avoid a contact with another cyclist.
The red jersey change owner and he's now on the jersey of Kwiatkowski.
