L'UCI ascolti le lamentele dei corridori e garantisca la loro sicurezza

Il dolore e lo sgomento per la morte di Bjorg Lambrecht è ancora palpabile in gruppo, ma non è solo per questo che i corridori impegnati al Binck Bank Tour stanno alzando la voce. La sicurezza in corsa è sempre stata una priorità per i protagonisti del mondo del ciclismo e i loro rappresentanti che pretendono provvedimenti immediati per tutelare i ciclisti.
La corsa tra Belgio e Olanda da quando è scattata il 12 agosto ha dimostrato di non essere di livello World Tour, titolo riconosciutogli dall'Unione Ciclistica Internazionale, nonostante evidenti lacune organizzative a cominciare dalla scelta dei percorsi. I partecipanti si stanno lamentando in modo uniforme per le strade strette, gli ostacoli non segnalati, le curve e i buchi sul manto stradale in prossimità degli arrivi, resi ancora più pericolosi dal maltempo, che di frequente imperversa in questa zona durante il mese di agosto, dal pericolosissimo attraversamento di tifosi, da transenne pericolose.
«Il nostro delegato ha segnalato i tanti problemi agli organizzatori e all'UCI, il cui delegato alla sicurezza dovrebbe finalmente arrivare oggi in loco. I corridori stanno affrontando un percorso cittadino ad ostacoli, io mi chiedo: chi lo ha autorizzato? Domani si concluderà questa corsa, ma a queste condizioni non è accettabile attaccare il numero alla schiena» interviene Gianni Bugno, presidente dell'Associazione Internazionale dei Corridori.
«Ci sono delle norme e vanno rispettate. In questo momento non ci interessano le sanzioni che verranno comminate, gli incidenti vanno prevenuti, non possiamo andare avanti così. I corridori non possono rischiare la pelle perchè l'organizzatore non può garantire uno standard di sicurezza di un certo tipo. Certe mancanze non sono ammissibili, un evento organizzato in questo modo non può far parte del World Tour» insiste il due volte campione del mondo.
«Siamo stufi, l'UCI ci ringrazia per le nostre segnalazioni ma non fa molto per cambiare le cose. Crediamo nel lavoro di squadra, nel dialogo e nell'operato delle commissioni, ma non possiamo permetterci di essere presi sotto gamba. Non possiamo più accettare questo modus operandi. Se è questa l'attrattiva del ciclismo a cui la federazione internazionale sta mirando stiamo decisamente andando nella direzione sbagliata».

The UCI has to listen to the riders' complaints and must guarantee their safety
The pain and dismay for the death of Bjorg Lambrecht is still palpable in the group, but it is not only for this reason that the riders involved in the Binck Bank Tour are raising their voices. Safety in the race has always been a priority for the protagonists of the cycling world and their representatives who demand immediate measures to protect the riders.
Since this race between Belgium and Netherlands has started on the 12th of August has proven to not deserve the World Tour level, a title given by the International Cycling Union, despite evident problems for the safety of the riders, starting from the choice of the race course. The participants are complaining uniformly about the narrow streets, the unmarked obstacles, the sudden curves and holes on the ground in proximity of the arrivals, made even more dangerous by the bad weather, which frequently rages in this area during the month of August, from the dangerous crossing of fans, from dangerous barriers.
«Our delegate reported the many problems to the organizers and to the UCI, whose safety delegate is finally coming today at the race. The riders are facing a city obstacle course, I wonder: who authorized it? Tomorrow this race will end, but under these conditions it is not acceptable to ride» says Gianni Bugno, president of the International Riders Association.
«There are rules and they must be respected. At the moment we are not interested in listening only about penalties that may be imposed to the organiser, accidents must be prevented, we cannot go on like this. Riders cannot risk their life because the organizer is not able to guarantee a certain type of safety standard. Problems like these are not admissible, an event organised in this way cannot be part of the World Tour» insists the two-time world champion.
«We are tired, the UCI thanks us for our reports but does not much to change the things. We believe in teamwork, in dialogue and in the work of the commissions, but we cannot afford not to be taken seriously. We can no longer accept this modus operandi. If this is the attractiveness of cycling to which the international federation is aiming, we are definitely going in the wrong direction».
