TOUR DE FRANCE - STAGE 17
ANTHONY PEREZ, THE FRENCH NATIONAL DAY

In front of his family, at home, Anthony Perez did a great performance. Initiator of the day's breakaway, alone in the lead with 6 km to go, he did more than ever for his team. Here is a look back at a day full of surprises and emotions.

The Col du Portet with its steep slopes, its joyful and colourful crowd was the scene of his last battle of the day. The one where he had to look for hidden resources, the one where he had to keep on fighting for a few more minutes. Anthony Perez was exhausted, his face showed the pain, the water he was spraying on himself didn't change anything. With less than 7 km to go, the leaders' train put an end to his breakaway, but the memories remained, as well as the recognition and the proud memory of his own contribution to this National Day.

Thus ended the day of Anthony, which started with a good news: the announcement of the extension of his contract (for two more years), the pleasures of riding at home and under the watchful eyes of his family. He won the team's first podium in this Tour de France with great success, winning the Combativity Award. He also adds a new highlight to Cofidis' record in the Tour de France, after Pierre-Luc Perichon's 4th place and the numerous breakaways, from Jelle Wallays to Ruben Fernández.

Meanwhile, Martin keeps on going

At the same time, Guillaume Martin, true to himself, held his position among the leaders. Slightly distanced at the end of the stage, he remains in the competition for the "top 10", in 9th place and best French rider.

The battle will start again tomorrow and it will be just as fierce. 129,7 km on the programme, four climbs, two of which are out of category: a new day for the bravest is awaited.

THEY SAID

Antho P

Anthony PEREZ : " I wanted to be in the breakaway and I had the right feeling to do it. It was a pleasure to be in the front and of course I thought about fighting for the stage victory. I did everything at 100% and I was caught not far from the finish. That is part of cycling and I enjoyed myself today. On July 14th, in front of my family, it was really a great moment. And it was my first podium in the Tour de France and it's just magical! "

Guillaume Martin

Guillaume MARTIN : " As for my Tour this year, I am regular without being exceptional. I tried my best to limit the gaps. I did most of the last climb alone, trying to manage my effort as much as possible. I will give it my all tomorrow to try to hang on to this "top 10". On a finish like this one, Tadej Pogacar is untouchable so it would be illusory to aim for a stage victory. For me, the priority is simple: to stay well placed in the general classification! "
