Meintjes, a step away for making history; Rui the most combative

22 luglio 2016

Impressive Meintjes and combative Rui Costa for LAMPRE-MERIDA in the great Alps climbs of the 19th stage of the Tour de France, the Albertville-Saint Gervais Mont Blanc, with one hors categorie hill (Monteé de Bisanne), two 1st category hills (Col de la Forclaz e l'ascesa finale) and one 2nd category hill (Col de la Forclaz de Quiege) in 146 km.

Meintjes was 4th at the arrival, main protagonist among the top riders of the Grande Boucle and he shifted one position in the general classification, where he's 8th at 7'02" to Froome.
What is thrilling is the fact that for the South African climber there's the prospect of becoming the first African cyclist to complete the Tour de France in the top 10: still 259,5 km before achieving this amazing result.

Rui Costa exploited once again his fighting spirit which was his companion during this edition of the French race, attacking in the very early kilometers and forming a breakaway of 19 riders, which however could not rely on an advantage larger than 5', because of the work of Astana in the front of the peloton.
The Portuguese rider succeeded in counter-attacking after the summit of the Monteé de Bisanne together with Rolland, who eventually crashed and left Rui Costa as solo leader of the stage until the final climb, where Bardet overtook LAMPRE-MERIDA's athlete and won the stage.

This is the second time LAMPRE-MERIDA won this prize in the Grande Boucle 2016, the first one thanks to Arashiro in the 6th stage.

The selection among the general classification contenders began in the wet descent of the Monteé de Bisanne, where some riders crashed (Froome and Nibali, as example), however Meintjes demonstrated his huge climbing skills on the final ascent, where he reached the arrival with Rodriguez and Valverde as first chasers of Bardet (at 23").

"I had planned with the team to try to attack in the early part of the stage, this had been the best solution also in the previous stage for anticipating the battle among the contenders for the general classification - Rui Costa explained - I feel I realized a good performance, my legs were ok, unfortunately Rolland crashed when we were leading the race, he could have give me an important support in the sector between the last two climbs.

On the final ascent, Bardet joined me and he asked me to cooperate, however I had spent many energies in the breakaway and he was very strong, so he deserved the victory, as Meintjes deserves to receive great congrats for the impressive results he's achieving.

I have not yet obtained victories even my condition is good, today I go to the hotel with the award as most combative, which is a prize for the efforts I had paid during this Tour for attacking almost in every demanding stage".

Meintjes commented: "I'm trying to realize the best possible performances day by day, relying on my legs, which are supporting me in an impressive way.
I'm satisfied, my condition is constantly good and today I pedalled very well on the climbs and also in the downhill which caused some troubles".
