Tour de France #1: Giacomo Nizzolo sprints to 4th place

Mike Teunissen (Team Jumbo-Visma) was somewhat of a surprise winner of the opening stage of this year's Tour de France. Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansrohe) was 2nd and Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal) 3rd. 

Brussels played host to the opening stage of the 2019 Tour de France and there was an electric atmosphere around the entire 194km stage. With the famous Muur de Geraardsbergen and Bosberg climbs coming in the opening part of the stage, the sprinters made sure to have things their own way come the finish. 

Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka were backing our in-form Italian sprinter, Giacomo Nizzolo, for the tough finale. Reinardt Janse van Rensburg and Edvald Boasson Hagen were tasked with delivering Nizzolo to the line, and they were able to place him near enough to the front of the main bunch when a crash took place under the kilometer to go banner, avoiding the pile up. 

It was a tough final kilometer, only for the strongest sprinters, with a long drag all the way up to line. Nizzolo showed he had good legs, coming from a few places down at the 300m to go point, but finishing fast to secure 4th place on the stage. 

" The first part of the stage was harder than I thought, with some climbs and cobbles. I was not feeling super but then in the final 30km the feeling was much better. It was a strange sprint, going slightly uphill and the speed dropped at 300m to go so things changed a little. In the end, I got 4th place with good feelings so we are hopeful of doing better in the next day's." - Giacomo Nizzolo 

Teunissen was the surprise stage victor, and first yellow jersey of the race, taking the win after his main sprinter, Dylan Groenewegen went down in the crash at 1km to go. All the other Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka riders got through today's stage well and look forward to tomorrow's team time trial.

TEUNISSEN BEFFA SAGAN ed EWAN per la prima GIALLA del TOUR a BRUXELLES

Va il Olanda la prima maglia gialla del Tour de France 2019 con Mike Teunissen che ha regolato al fotofinish Peter Sagan e Caleb Ewan al termine della prima tappa Bruxelles-Brussel di 194,5 km

Primo degli italiani Giacomo Nizzolo 4^ davanti a Sonny Colbrelli, il velocista della Barhain Merida che partito lungo ancor prima di Peter Sagan secondo, non é riuscito a mantenere la posizione ed è stato rimontato dal vincitore Teunissen.
Elia Viviani capitano della belga Deceuninck-Quick Step, che oggi e domani giocano in casa a Bruxelles, partito da favorito di queste prima tappa, é stato spallonato da Ewan nelle concitate fasi finali della corsa e si è piazzato solo nono.

Coinvolti in due cadute nel finale, Jakob Fuglsang  ai meno 20 prima, poi riportato dai sui dell’Astana in gruppo ed anche Damiano Caruso e Matej Mohorič della Barhain Merida ed all’ultimo km il capitano della Jumbo Visma, Dylan Groenewegen che é andato ad impattare dopo aver ruotato in un rallentamento, il corridore che lo precedeva (a fianco c'era Vincenzo Nibali che fortunatamente non è stato coinvolto dalla caduta). 

Fuglsang spaventato dopo la caduta, ha subito un forte colpo alla testa dove ha rimediato nonostante il casco, una ferita al sopracciglio che ha richiesto alcuni punti di sutura ed una al ginocchio destro, mentre Caruso una grossa botta con contusioni nel sopra gluteo..

Scopriremo solo domani quanto queste cadute influiranno sulla prestazione nella dura cronosquadre del Tour de France.

Intanto l'olandese Teunissen si sta godendo questo inaspettato successo all'inaugurazione della Grande Boucle 2019.
