Il Tour de France di Rui Costa è finito sulle rampe del Col du Tourmalet, a 45 km dalla conclusione dell'11^tappa, la Pau-Cauterets di 188 km con le ascese del Col de Loucrup (3^categoria), della Cote de Bagnères de Bigorre (4^categoria), della Cote de Mauvezin (3^categoria), del Col d'Aspin (1^categoria), del Tourmalet (hors categorie) e la salita finale di Cauterets (3^categoria).
Il campione portoghese (foto Bettini), già in difficoltà nella frazione di martedì, ha provato ad affrontare con spirito propositivo la tappa odierna, ma ha trovato lungo la strada solo cattive sensazioni che lo hanno costretto al ritiro: "E' una giornata molto triste: avevo lavorato molto per arrivare al Tour de France in buona condizione, ho fatto sacrifici per dare concretezza al progetto di provare a ben figurare nella Grande Boucle e ora mi ritrovo tra i ritirati. Mi spiace che il mio Tour sia finito in anticipo e in questo modo, chiedo scusa alla squadra, ai compagni, agli sponsor e ai tifosi per aver mancato gli obiettivi che mi ero prefisso.
Dalla caduta nella quale sono rimasto coinvolto lunedì scorso, il mio fisico ha impiegato qualche giorno per tornare a essere a posto, ho avvertito dolori alla gamba sinistra e alla schiena e non ho pedalato come avrei voluto.
La mia competitività non è stata comunque al livello degli avversari, non ho avuto complete sensazioni di brillantezza e questa percezione mi ha limitato e ha reso negativa la mia esperienza francese. Il calo di condizione è stato acuito dall'intensità con la quale sono state affrontate le tappe e dal caldo, ma sono conscio che queste sono variabili tipiche del Tour.
Oggi avrei voluto riscattare la brutta giornata di ieri, ma ancora una volta non ho avuto dalle gambe le risposte adatte per provare a essere competitivo, anzi le sensazioni sono state pessime e mi hanno spinto al ritiro.
Ora rientrerò a casa, mi piacerebbe comunque riuscire a confermare gli appuntamenti agonistici del resto della stagione: vorrei riabbracciare i tifosi nella Clasica di San Sebastian".
La corsa è stata vinta dal polacco Majka grazie a una fuga iniziata, in compagnia di altri 6 atleti, subito dopo lo scollinamento della Cote de Mauvezin. Majka ha seminato gli avversari, compreso Daniel Martin che si era portato sui fuggitivi, sul Col du Tourmalet.
Il primo corridore della LAMPRE-MERIDA a tagliare il traguardo è stato Nelson Oliveira, 51° a 15'54" dal vincitore.

The Tour de France of Rui Costa ended on the climb of the Col de Tourmalet, at 45 km to the end of the 11th stage, the Pau-Cauterets, 188 km with the climbs of the Col de Loucrup (3rd category ), of the Cote de Bagnères de Bigorre (4th category), of the Cote de Mauvezin (3rd category), of the Col d'Aspin (1st category), of the Tourmalet (hors categorie) and the final climb of Cauterets (3rd category).
The Portuguese champion (photo Bettini), who had struggled during Tuesday stage too, faced today stage with the best intentions, but his legs did not allow him to go on in the race: "Today is a bad day: I worked a lot to be ready to face the challenge of the Tour de France, I made sacrifices to be in a good condition and now I'm in the withdrawals list.
I'm so sad I my Grande Boucled has already finished and I'd want to apologize with the team, my mates, the sponsors and my fans because I missed the goal I had set myself.
From the moment of the crash in which I was involved on the past Monday, I had pain at the left leg and at the back, I could not pedal as I would have wanted and it took some days before my body was ok again.
I could not compete at the same high level of the other riders, I did not perceive felling of complete competitiveness, I felt this gap and this limited me and made the French experience very bad.
The decrease of the level of my condition was made worse by the intensity of the stages and by the hot weather, but I'm aware these are typical characteristics of the Tour de France.
Today I would have like to realize a good performance, especially because the day before the results had been bad. I was at the start full of positive thoughts but my legs did not give me the necessary good feedbacks: I really struggled, I tried to react but I could not, so I had to quit the race.
I'm going to come back home but I'd like to be able to confirm the program for my future races: I'd like to meet my fans in Clasica San Sebastian".
The stage was won by Majka, who completed a long breakaway which had began just after the bunch had reached the summit of the Col de Mauvezin, after a first part of the race during which many attempts of attack had been neutralized.
Majka escaped from the peloton with other 6 riders, which became 7 after that Martin had joined them, and he counter attacked on the Tourmalet.
The first LAMPRE-MERIDA's athlete at the arrival was Nelson Oliveir, 51st at 15'54" to the winner.
