E' stato il vento la variabile più significativa dell'11^ tappa del Tour de France, la Carcassonne-Montpellier di 162,5 km.
In assenza di asperità del profilo altimetrico (solo due innocui Gpm di 4^ categoria in avvio di gara) e con il vento a sospingere il corridori nella prima parte del percorso, è stato proprio un cambio nella direzione del vento nell'avvicinamento a Montpellier a rappresentare la maggiore insidia per il gruppo e a determinare l'esito della corsa.
Sul traguardo, al contrario del vincitore Sagan e di Froome (2°), non può sorridere Meintjes, attardato di 1'09".
Il plotone aveva tenuto sotto controllo per tutta la tappa la fuga di due corridori (Vichot e Howard), per poi chiudere il divario con un'accelerazione a 50 km dal traguardo, in corrispondenza di un primo tratto di vento laterale, seguito a un frangente di gara caratterizzato da una serie di cadute, in una delle quali è rimasto coinvolto anche Grmay (abrasioni sul fianco).
A 13 km dal termine, un quartetto formato da Sagan e Bodnar (Tinkoff) e da Froome e Thomas (Sky) ha attaccato, frazionando il gruppo in varie tronconi: Meintjes si è trovato a cercare la rimonta nel terzo gruppo inseguitore, pagando al traguardo un distacco di 1'09".
In classifica generale, lo scalatore della LAMPRE-MERIDA è sceso al 13° posto, a 2'10" da Froome.
"Dispiace perdere poco più di 1' minuto, dopo aver corso con la massima attenzione per tutta la tappa, ricevendo il sostegno dei miei compagni - ha commentato Meintjes (foto Bettini) - Avevamo affrontato bene tutte le situazioni di una tappa che, sapevamo, avrebbe presentato molte insidie proprio a causa del vento.
Correre in queste condizioni è sempre molto dispendioso, nel momento dell'attacco di Sagan e Froome il gruppo aveva rallentato dopo alcuni chilometri molto intensi, quindi l'allungo è stato ancora più efficace e, per me, negativo.
Avrò spazio in salita per provare a recuperare il tempo perso".

The strong wind was the most insidious element of the 11th stage of the Tour de France, which started from Carcassonne and finished in Montpellier after 162,5 km.
The course was not demanding (only two climbs of 4th category in the early kilometers of the race) and the tailwind pushed the riders in the first part of the stage, however a change in the wind direction in the final part of the course decided the race.
On the arrival, Sagan (1st) and Froome (2nd) could smile, while Meintjes regretted the lost of 1'09".
The peloton had controlled for most part of the race the breakaway of two riders (Vichot and Howard), whose action was eventually neutralized at 50 km to the arrival, when the pace of the bunch was raised with the aim of forming echelons in the wind.
The neutralization of the breakaway had been preceded by a series of crashes, one of which had involved Grmay (bruises on the hip).
At -13 km, four riders (Sagan and Bodnar for Tinkoff and Froome and Thomas for Sky) attacked exploiting a change of the wind direction and broke the peloton in several groups: Meintjes reached the arrival in the third chasing group at 1'09".
In the overall classification, he's 13th at 2'10" to Froome.
"It's a pity I lost these seconds, especially because my team mates and me raced the whole day long paying huge attention and succeeding in avoiding troubles - Meintjes (photo Bettini) explained - We were aware of the dangers of today stage, especially of the one caused by the wind.
It's not easy to race in these conditions, however we did it quite well, until the attack by Sagan and Froome: the bunch had slowed down after having covered the previous kilometers at a very high pace, the level of the attention was a little bit lower and so the bunch got split.
I'll try to recover in the next climbs what I lost today".
