Rui Costa nel primo gruppo (18° posto) all'arrivo della 2^tappa del Tour de France (Saint Lo-Cherbourg, 183 km) e Meintjes solo qualche metro più indietro ma classificato con 11" di ritardo dal vincitore Sagan per via di un buco creato dai corridori che precedevano lo scalatore sudafricano
Il percorso della 2^tappa della Grande Boucle, pur presentando solo tre semplici Gpm di 4^categoria in avvio di gara, ha messo a dura prova l'attenzione e il livello agonistico dei corridori, che hanno trovato pochissimi tratti di strada pianeggiante e ancor meno rettilinei.
Un saliscendi continuo nel quale la LAMPRE-MERIDA ha lavorato bene per scortare Rui Costa e Meintjes.
La formazione diretta dai tecnici Mauduit e Scirea, supportati da Righi, ha saputo reagire prontamente quando, a 120 km dal traguardo, una caduta che ha visto molti corridori nel gruppo finire sull'asfalto ha coinvolto anche Rui Costa, Cimolai e Meintjes: i tre ciclisti blu-fucsia-verdi sono ripartiti senza problemi e si sono riaccodati prontamente al plotone, che in quel momento stava conducendo un inseguimento non intenso ai 4 fuggitivi di giornata (Voss, Stuyven, Benedetti e Breen).
Il ritmo del gruppo ha iniziato ad alzarsi notevolmente in vista del finale, che proponeva in rapida sequenza la Cote d'Octeville (1,3 km al 4,6%, scollinamento a -7,5 km), la Cote de la Glaciere (1,9 km al 6,5% e scollinamento a -1,5 km) e la rampa finale verso il traguardo, 700 metri al 5,7% di pendenza media.
Rui Costa è riuscito a imboccare le brevi ascese in buona posizione, presentandosi in vista dell'arrivo assieme ai favoriti (Stuyven, ultimo reduce della fuga, ripreso a 1000 metri dal traguardo), ma non è riuscito a inserirsi nella lotta per il successo, conquistato da Sagan su Alaphilippe e Valverde.
"In una tappa dal percorso nervoso come quello di oggi, era importante avere buone gambe e io penso di aver avuto belle sensazioni, riuscendo anche a superare senza problemi il piccolo intoppo della caduta, nella quale mi sono appoggiato ad altri atleti che erano finiti a terra - ha spiegato Rui Costa (foto Bettini) - Il finale è stato molto intenso, negli ultimi 25 km c'è stata una continua lotta per le posizioni e in quei momenti si spendono tantissime energie.
Ho pedalato con efficacia sugli strappi, sarebbe servita un po' più di forza per poter lottare per un piazzamento tra i primi che, sono sicuro, avrò l'opportunità di cercare presto".
In classifica generale, Rui Costa è 20° a 14" dalla nuova maglia gialla Sagan, mentre Meintjes è 32° a 25".
La terza tappa porterà il gruppo verso sud, con partenza da Granville e arrivo ad Angers dopo 223,5 km, per un finale adatto ai velocisti.

Rui Costa in the front group (18th place) at the arrival of the 2nd stage of the Tour de France (Saint Lo-Cherbourg, 183 km) and Meintjes few meters behind which however were enough for him to be classified with 11" to the winner Sagan because of a gap in the front group which was created by some riders who were preceding the South African climber.
The course of the 2nd stage of the Grand Boucle had only three categorized hills of 4th category in the early part, however it required to the cyclists a high attention and a high agonistic level because there was almost no flat sectors and no straight roads.
LAMPRE-MERIDA succeeded in supporting Rui Costa and Meintes in the proper way and the team reacted very well when a crash occurred in the peloton at 120 km to the arrival and Rui Costa, Cimolai and Meintjes were involved.
Luckily, no one had physical problems and they could all come back on the bike and rejoin themselves to the peloton, which was in that moment chasing, not at a high intensity, the 4 riders breakaway (Voss, Benedetti, Breen and Stuyven).
The chase became stronger in the final kilometers, which were charactrerized by three hills which were the Cote d'Octeville (1,3 km at 4,6%, summit at -7,5 km), the Cote de la Glaciere (1,9 km at 6,5% and summit at -1,5 km) and the final ramp to the finish line, 700 meters at 5,7% of average grandient.
Rui Costa approached the hills in the front positions of the peloton and on the final ramp he was together with all the favourite riders (the breakaway was neutralized when Stuyven was reached at 1000 meters to go), however he could not battle for the victory, which was obtained by Sagan preeceding Alaphilippe and Valverde.
"On a windy course as today one, it was necessary to br able to rely on good legs and I had positive feedback, going beyond also the crash in which I did not fall on the road - Rui Costa (photo Bettini) explained - In the final 25 km the battle for the front positions was very intense, it took away many energies.
I pedaled well on the hills, it would have been necessary more power for having the chance to fight for a top result which, I'm sure, I'll have the opportunity to obtain soon".
In the overall classification, Rui Costa is 20th at 14" to the news yellow jersey Sagan and Meintjes is 32nd at 25".
In the 3rd stage, the peloton will ride from Granville to Angers on a distance of 223,5 km: the course is suitable for the sprinters.
