Louis Meintjes promosso all'esame della durissima tappa pirenaica, l'8^frazione del Tour de France con partenza da Pau e arrivo a Bagnères de Luchon dopo 184 km inaspriti dalle ascese del Tourmalet (hors categorie), l'Horquette d'Ancizan (2^categoria), il Col de Val Louron-Azet (1^categoria) e il Col de Peyresourde (1^categoria, scollinamento a 15,5 km).
Il giovane sudafricano ha raggiunto il traguardo con il gruppo dei 13 migliori corridori, preceduto solamente da Froome, vincitore di tappa.
Meintjes (foto Bettini) ha tagliato il traguardo in 13^posizione.
L'abbuffata di salite e il grande caldo non hanno smorzato l'agonismo del gruppo, partito a gran velocità e capace di coprire quasi 50 km nella prima ora di gara, con conseguente impossibilità per i tentativi di attacco susseguitisi di trovare un margine anche minimo sul plotone.
Tra i corridori attivi nel cercare di fuoriuscire dal gruppo si sono messi in evidenza anche Rui Costa, Grmay, Polanc e Durasek.
E' stato il Tourmalet a battezzare la prima fuga buona, che ha portato Pinot, Tony Martin e Majka a condurre la corsa con un vantaggio comunque esiguo sul gruppo, condotto su un buon ritmo dal Team Sky anche sull'Horquette d'Ancizan: presente nel plotone la maglia della LAMPRE-MERIDA grazie a Meintjes, sempre a suo agio e capace di gestirsi al meglio anche nelle salite successive.
La fuga è stata neutralizzata sul Col de Val Louron-Azet, preludio alle schermaglie tra i big sull'ascesa del Col de Peyresourde, con Meintjes regolare nel mantenere le ruote del gruppo di testo, assottigliatosi chilometro dopo chilometro fino a presentarsi allo scollinamento con soli 14 membri.
Particolarmente significativi per Meintjes sono state le difficoltà di Alaphilippe, Barguil e Kelderman, diretti rivali del corridore sudafricano nella classifica dei giovani.
Subit dopo lo scollinamento, si è registrato l'attacco vincente di Froome, lanciato in discesa verso il successo con 13" sui 13 primi inseguitori tra i quali pedalava Meintjes assieme a nomi altisonanti quali Daniel Martin (2°), Rodriguez (3°), Bardet (4°) e in ordine Kreuziger, Aru, Yates, Valverde, Mollema, Porte, Quintana, Van Garderen ed Henao.
Meintjes è salito al 13° posto nella classifica generale, a 34" dalla nuova maglia gialla Froome, e ora tallona Yates a soli 18" nella graduatoria della maglia bianca.
"Penso sia stata una buona giornata per me, sono soddisfatto per la mia prestazione - ha spiegato Meintjes - E' stata una tappa molto impegnativa, il Team Sky ha affrontato le salite con un passo che, alla lunga, ha fatto selezione, comunque ho avuto buone sensazioni, la mia Merida Reacto ha assecondato bene le mie gambe e sono sempre riuscito ad avere un certo margine dall'andare fuori giri.
Le temperature erano molto calde, ma questo non è stato un grosso problema perché solitamente mi esprimo bene in queste condizioni.
Ero soddisfatto per aver scollinato il Col de Peyresourde nel gruppo di testa, ma la fatica non era ancora terminata perché l'attacco di Froome ci ha portato ad affrontare la discesa ad alta velocità e, in vista del traguardo, ho anche dovuto partecipare alla volata per non perdere secondi.
Non ho pensato più di tanto alla classifica dei giovani, comunque mi sono accorto che, nel gruppo di testa, era rimasto il solo Yates tra gli atleti in lizza per la maglia bianca.
Non faccio progetto, preferisco pensare di dare il meglio tappa dopo tappa".
La 9^tappa partirà in Spagna da Vielha Val d'Aran e si concluderà ad Andorra (Arcalis): 184,5 km da percorrere, con le salite del Port de la Boniagua (1^categoria), Port del Cantò (1^categoria), Cote de la Comella (2^categoria), Col de Beixalis (1^categoria) e l'ascesa hors categorie verso il traguardo.

Louis Meintjes passed succesfully the exam of the very demanding Pyrenean stage, the 8th one of the Tour de France which started from Pau and finished in Bagnères de Luchon oafter 184 km and the climbs of Tourmalet (hors categorie), l'Horquette d'Ancizan (2nd category), the Col de Val Louron-Azet (1st category) and the Col de Peyresourde (1st category, summit at 15,5 km).
The climber from LAMPRE-MERIDA (photo Bettini) reached the arrival in 13th position, in the top riders group which chased Froome, the winner of the stage and the new yellow jersey.
The series of impressive climbs and the heat did not discourage the bunch from a fast start: the peloton covered almost 50 km in the first hour of race and this prevent any attack attempts to obtain a minumum advantage.
Among the attackers who tried to go clear there were also Rui Costa, Grmay, Polanc and Durasek
The stage needs to wait until the Tourmalet for the first real breakaway, which brings to the front of the race Pinot, Tony Martin and Majka, who however could not build up a large advantage on the peloton which was led, on the Horquette d'Ancizan too, by the Team Sky at a quite fast pace: in the bunch there were the LAMPRE-MERIDA's cyclist Meintjes, who succeeded in managing his enegies in a very impressive way also on the following climbs.
The breakaway was neutralized on the Col de Val Louron-Azet and this was the preludo to the skirmish between the top riders on the Peyresourde, which selected the front group to 14 members.
Just after the summit of the climb, Froome attacked and he succeeded in leading the race in the downhill until the finish line, obtaining a solo victory on a chasing group of 13 riders: Meintjes was 13th and he was pedling with top cyclists as Daniel Martin (2nd), Rodriguez (3rd), Bardet (4th) and Kreuziger, Aru, Yates, Valverde, Mollema, Porte, Quintana, Van Garderen, Henao.
Meintjes is 13th in the general classification at 34" to the yellow jersey of Froom and he's 2nd in the white jersey standing at 18" to Yates.
"I think it was a good day for me, I'm quite satisfied with my performance - Meintjes said - Of course it was a hard stage, Team Sky pace on the climbs was selective, however I had good feelings, my Merida Reacto bike supported me perfectly and I always managed to avoid to go too close to the limits of the effort.
It was very hot, but I find myself quite well in these conditions.
I was satisfied when I realized I succeeded in reaching the summit of the Peyresourde in the front group, however the efforts were not over, since Froome attacked and our group chased him at full speed and I had to give my best for following that pace and to sprint in view of the arrival.
I did not think too much about the youth classification, my main target was to be in the front group, however did I notice that only Yates among the contender for the white jersey was in my group.
I don't want to make project, I just want to give my best day by day".
