Via col vento per il Tour de France 2016.
Partenza suggestiva (da Mont Saint-Michel) e arrivo commemorativo (Utah Beach, una delle spiagge luogo degli sbarchi alleati del D-Day) per la prima frazione della Grande Boucle, disputatasi sulla distanza de1 188 km, in gran parte battuti da un forte vento che ha alzato subito il livello di intensità della corsa.
Neanche il tempo di lasciare Mont Saint-Michel e 3 corridori (Howard, Voss e Barta) si sono catapultati all'attacco, raggiunti dopo un lungo inseguimento da altri due atleti (Howes e Delaplace).
Il gruppo ha controllato senza troppe apprensioni la fuga, vivendo un solo momento di tensione quando mancavano 77 km al traguardo, con la caduta di Contador in testa al gruppo inm un frangente nel quale la velocità del plotone era incrementata notevolmente per alcune schermaglie nel vento tra le squadre degl uomini di classifica.
La LAMPRE-MERIDA ha ben protetto Meintjes, Rui Costa e il velocista Cimolai, l'unico atleta blu-fucsia-verde con uno spunto veloce adatto per provare a gettarsi nella mischia: bisogna però sottilineare come il rettilineo finale, con il vento che soffiava alle spalle del gruppo, presentatosi compatti nell'ultimo chilometro dopo che la fuga era stata annullata ai -5 km, è stato coperto ad altissima velocità, fattore che non ha certo favorito Cimolai, maggiormente a suo agio in arrivi più impegnativi nei quali incide di meno la presenza di un treno di compagni.
Una caduta a 400 metri dal traguardo ha reso la volata maggiormente complicata, portando Cimolai a dover riporre le proprie ambizioni in una prossima tappa.
Nella caduta, nessun corridore della LAMPRE-MERIDA è rimasto coinvolto e il primo atleta blu-fucsia-verde a tagliare il traguardo è stato Cimolai, 61°, mentre Cavendish ha colto il successo di tappa e la prima maglia gialla della Grande Boucle 2016.
La caduta ha spezzato il gruppo ma, essendo avvenuta all'interno dei 3 km finali, ha portato alla neutralizzazione dei distacchi.
Giornata tranquilla per Meintjes e Rui Costa, scortati a dovere nel vento dai compagni di squadra, mentre meno semplice è stata la tappa per Arashiro (in photo, @YukiyaArashiro, assieme a Rui Costa al chilometro 0 del Tour 2016), caduto a 27 km dall'arrivo.
Il Dottor Guardascione, medico della LAMPRE-MERIDA, ha riscontrato contusioni alla spalla destra e alle dita della mano sinistra, non compromettenti il prosieguo della corsa per il talento giapponese.
"Ho cercato di essere nel vivo dello sprint, ma un arrivo come quello di oggi, con il vento a soffiare dalle spalle e a far toccare gli 80 km/h, era adatto a corridori maggiormente potenti e con un treno a lanciarli in volata - ha spiegato Cimolai - Ringrazio i compagni per avermi portato nella prima parte del gruppo, sapevo che poi avrei dovuto provare a muovermi autonomamente nel modo migliore per cercare un piazzamento, ma la tipologia di volata e la caduta hanno reso questo obiettivo difficilmente raggiungibile.
So che ci saranno arrivi più adatti a me, sento la fiducia della squadra e darò tutto per ripagarla".

The start of the Tour de France 2016 has gone with the wind.
The 1st stage started from Mont Saint-Michel and finished at Utah Beach at the end of a 188 km course on which the wind blowed strongly increased the level of difficulty of the race.
Few meters after the start from the iconic Mont Saint-Michel three cyclists (Howard, Voss and Barta) went clear from the peloton and they were reached by other two attackers (Delaplace and Howes).
The five riders breakaway was controlled easily by the bunch, which lived only one hectic moment at 77 km to the arrival, when Contador crashed in the front of the group while the cyclists were pedaling at a high speed because of some attempts of opening echelons in the wind.
LAMPRE-MERIDA supproted properly Meintjes, Rui Costa and the sprinter Cimolai, who had received the task of battling in the final part of the race which was suitable for fast riders: however, the tail wind which allowed the riders to sprint at a speed higher than 80 km/h made the sprint more suitable for athletes who are more powerful than Cimolai (who is more competitive in more demanding courses) and who could be supported by a lead-out train.
Also a crash made the sprint even more complicated and Cimolai had to give up on his ambitions and focus his attention on the next stages. The crash, which did not involve any LAMPRE-MERIDA's rider, occurred in the last 3 km, so the gaps have been neutralized.
Cimolai was 61st at the arrival, the stage was won by Cavendish, who's the first yellow jersey of the Grande Boucle 2016.
Thanks to the good support received by the team, Meintjes and Rui Costa lived a calm stage, on the contrary Arashiro (in photo, @YukiyaArashiro, together with Rui Costa at km 0 of the Tour 2016) crashed at 27 km to the arrival: the team's physician Dr Guardascione stated that the Japanese cyclist suffered light abrasions on the right shoulded and on the fingers of the left hand, which however will not compromise the continuation of the Tour.
"I tried hard to be in the battle for the sprint, however I realized that it was a very very fast sprint which was suitable for riders which could rely on a higher power than mine and which could exploit the work of a lead-out train - Cimolai explained - My team mates were great in supporting me in reaching the front part of the bunch, then I was aware that I should have managed to try to find a good position in the approach of the sprint, however it was really difficult to achieve this result pedaling at a high speed and it became impossible after that the crash made the situation even more complicated.
I feel the trust of the team in me and I'll try to obtain a good result in the next stages, maybe in the ones more suitable for my characteristics".
