COLBRELLI SECOND ON STAGE 16 OF TOUR DE FRANCE

Sonny Colbrelli took his second podium finish at this year’s Tour de France, finishing 2nd on Stage 16.
The 16th Stage started in Andorra following the rest day, with the riders racing back into France and finish in Saint-Gaudens 169 kilometres later, taking on four classified climbs.
The day’s main breakaway formed following the intermediate sprint of 14 riders, including Colbrelli and Wright. The break was split with three riders up the road, and it was on the Col de la Core, where Konrad (Bora-Hansgrohe) attacked the rest of the break to bridge the front three riders, as the main peloton was over 7 minutes behind.

Konrad was the only rider able to stay out in front, and despite the efforts to close him down in the final kilometres, he held on for the win. The chasing group then battled it out in a sprint. Colbrelli beat Matthews(Bike-Exchange) to take second. Fred Wright, this year’s youngest rider in the Tour, also managed his highest place finish taking 12th, helping the team grow the lead in the Team Classification.

Sonny Colbrelli: “I’m happy with my performance today, but I’m also disappointed not to come away with the win. At one point, it felt like we had the gap under control, but Konrad was strong and managed to hold on.
I came here to win a Stage at Tour, and I think this was my best chance this year. I know that I can win these kinds of stages, and I will keep fighting to win a stage at the Tour. “
