Tsgabu Grmay (foto archivio Bettini) aveva centrato l'obiettivo di entrare nella fuga principale di giornata.
Il corridore etiope era riuscito, con tenacia e buone gambe, a essere tra i 21 corridori che, dopo una lunga serie di scatti, erano evasi dal gruppo nella 4^tappa della Vuelta a Espana, 163,5 km con partenza da Betanzos e arrivo a San Andres de Teixido, con 3 Gpm.
La fuga è nata dopo quasi 30 km di accesa battaglia e i 21 attaccanti sono riusciti a vincere la resistenza del gruppo solo sulle rampe dell'Alto de Serra Capela (3^categoria).
Grmay, bravo a rispettare le consegne del piano gara di giornata della LAMPRE-MERIDA, e gli altri 20 battistrada hanno accumulato un vantaggio massimo di 5'20, margine sufficiente per consentire agli attaccanti di lottare tra di loro per il successo di tappa sulla salita finale.
Lo scalatore etiope aveva già tentato a 17 km dal traguardo un attacco e non è riuscito ad affondare un colpo vincente nel finale di gara, giungendo all'arrivo, posto al termine di una salita di 2^categoria (11,2 km di lunghezza con pendenza media del 4,8%) in 19^ posizione a 1'42" da Calmejane, corridore francese capace di involarsi solitario verso la vittoria.
Sull'ultima salita il gruppo principale si è sfaldato e Meintjes ha confermato gli interessanti riscontri in salita mostrati già nella 3^frazione, chiudendo la prova odierna con il drappello di 13 atleti comprendente gli scalatori più attesi della Vuelta. Per il sudafricano, 29° posto di tappa a 2'06" dal vincitore.
In classifica generale, Meintjes sale in 33^posizione, a 3'11" dal nuovo leader Atapuma.
La LAMPRE-MERIDA aveva dovuto registrare durante la tappa il ritiro di Federico Zurlo, fortemente debilitato da un attacco febbrile occorso durante la notte.

Tsgabu Grmay (photo Bettini archive) had achieved the task which was assigned to him, that was to join the main breakaways of the 4th stage of the Vuelta a Espana, 163,5 km from Betanzos to San Andres de Teixido, with 3 categorized climbs.
The Ethiopian rider succeeded in being among the 21 riders who escaped, after a long series of attack attempts, after 30 km in the stage, on the first climb of the course (Alto de Serra Capela, 3rd category ascent).
The breakaway had a maximum advantage of 5'20" on the peloton, which was enough for giving to the attackers the opportunity to fight for the stage victory on the final ascent to the arrival (11,2 km, average gradient 4,8%).
Grmay had tried at 17 km to the arrival an attack, however he could not repeat the attempt on the final climb and he crossed the finish line in 19th place at 1'42" to the winner Calmejane.
Good performance by Meintjes, who completed the stage in the restricted group of the top climbers of the Vuelta: the South African rider was 29th at 2'06".
In the general classification, Meintjes is 33rd at 3'11".
During the stage, LAMPRE-MERIDA had to face the withdrawal of Federico Zurlo, who was debilitated because of the fever from he suffered during the night.
