Conti, prove di volo bis sull’Alto de Aitana

Conti attacks on the Alto de Aitana

L'Alto de Aitana come giudice ultimo della Vuelta a Espana e come scala verso le grandi ambizioni di Valerio Conti.

Sulla salita hors categorie (21 km, pendenza media del 5,9 %, massima 13,3%) si è infatti conclusa la 20^frazione della corsa spagnola, la Benidorm-Alto de Aitana di 193,2 km, con tre Gpm di 2^categoria prima dell'ascesa verso il traguardo, e il giovane scalatore della LAMPRE-MERIDA ha provato con coraggio a fare il bis dello splendido successo ottenuto nella 13^frazione.

Conti si era ben destreggiato nel turbinio di attacchi che aveva contraddistinto la scalata al primo Gpm di giornata (tentativi di fuga anche di Meintjes e Durasek) e i successivi chilometri, inserendosi nel drappello di 16 inseguitori del duo di battistrada Molard e Leon Sanchez.
Il ritardo del plotone dalla testa della corsa è cresciuto fino a 14'35", mentre il gruppetto di Conti si è mantenuto a non più di 2'15".

Il corridore della LAMPRE-MERIDA (foto Bettini) ha cercato di dare concretezza alla sua brama di doppietta sull'ascesa finale, lanciandosi in una progressione che lo ha portato ad avere nel mirino Leon Sanchez, rimasto leader solitario.
La rimonta di Conti non si è però conclusa in maniera positiva, dato che ai -5 km è stato raggiunto ae sopravanzato da Atapuma e Latour, entrambi membri del drappello nel quale aveva pedalato l'atleta blu-fucsia-verde.
Il duo franco-colombiano, dopo aver superato anche Leon Sanchez, ha battagliato fin sulla linea del traguardo e Latour ha colto il successo.
Conti, esaurite le energie e la spinta adrenalinica, ha raggiunto l'arrivo in 21^posizione.

"C'è stata grande battaglia per andare in fuga e Durasek, Meintjes e io siamo stati bravi nel coprire con le nostre presenze tutti i tentativi - ha spiegato Conti - Non è stato facile essere nell'azione principale, comunque, nonostante le energie spese, sentivo nel resto della tappa di avere buone gambe.

Sull'ultima salita ho provato ad anticipare scalatori di primissimo livello con Gesink, Latour e Atapuma, purtroppo erano ancora molto brillanti e mi hanno recuperato".

Ai corridori impegnati nella corsa a tappe spagnola rimane da completare l'ultima tappa, la pianeggiante Las Rozas-Madrid di 104,8 km: sarà passerella per la maglia rossa Quintana.

Alto de Aitana as final arbiter of the Vuelta a Espana.

On the hors categorie hill (21 km at the average gradient of 5,9% and maximum gradient 13,3%) there was the arrival of the 20th stage of the Spanish race, Benidorm-Alto de Aitana of 193,2 km, with three climbs of 2nd category before the final hill, and Valerio Conti tried to double the impressive victory he had obtained in the 13th stage.

At the end of the whirlwind of attacks which had characterized the first climb of the course and the following kilometers (Meintjes and Durasek among the protagonists), Conti was in the first chasing group of the leading duo Molard-Leon Sanchez.
The peloton did not intensy the chase and so the gap from the head of the race reached the 14'35", while Conti's group gap was not more than 2'15".

LAMPRE-MERIDA's cyclist (photo Bettini) tried to realize his plan of the double on the final ascent, when he attacked from this group and was very close to bridge the gap from Leon Sanchez, who had become the solitary leader..
Unfortunately, at -5 km Conti was reached and overtaken by Atapuma and Latour, who were former members of the same group of the blue-fuchsia-green rider: the French-Colombian duo battled until the finish line and Latour won the stage.

Conti, who was out of energies, was 21st.

"The battle in the early part okf the race was intense, however Meintjes, Durasek and me were great in joining the most important attempts - Conti explained - I managed to be in the main breakaway, it was not simple to succeeded in being in that group, however I still had good legs.

On the final climb, I tried to anticipate top climbers such as Atapuma, Latour and Gesink; unfortunately, I could not obtain a large advantage and they overtook me".

Only one stage to the end of the race, the easy and short stage Las Rozas-Madrid of 104,8 km: Quintana will make his parade wearing the red jersey.
