Aggiornamento medico

Medical update Jakob Fuglsang

Ewan strikes again at the Tour de France!

Caleb Ewan took his second stage victory at the Tour de France today! In a much-anticipated bunch sprint, the fast Australian launched an impressive acceleration to take the win in Nîmes! The Italian Viviani and the Dutchman Groenewegen finished second and third, respectively. Tim Wellens received his fourteenth polka dot jersey.

In tropical weather conditions, the riders took off in Nîmes for the final week of racing at the Tour de France. Almost immediately after the start - with the approval of the peloton - Bak, Gougeard, Ourselin, Rossetto and Wisniowski attacked to form today’s breakaway. The sprint teams immediately took control, but although the quintet was never granted much advantage, the escapees were only caught at a few kilometres from the line.

At fifteen kilometres from the finish - on an uncategorized climb - the pace was seriously increased. The sprinters were put to the test but they held on and a bunch sprint would take place in Nîmes. It was Caleb Ewan who launched an impressive sprint and took an outstanding second stage victory at the Tour de France! In his first ever Tour, Ewan already gathered six podium spots, two of them victories.

Caleb Ewan“It was so hot today and I was suffering a lot. I thought about it to get Maxime Monfort off the front because I thought I wouldn’t be able to hang on until the end. On a few climbs, I was really struggling but eventually, I kept the good position. This morning, before the start in Nîmes, we did a recon of the final kilometre with the team, so we knew what to expect. A long home stretch is not always the most easy finish because timing as well as positioning are harder. Jasper De Buyst did a tremendous lead-out and afterwards, I was on the wheel of the other fast guys, so I decided to go early. In the end, it paid off.”

“The fact that my wife and daughter are at the race for the first time, makes it really special. It is incredibly beautiful to celebrate this victory together with them. It was difficult to keep the confidence after some second and third places. I finally got it right in stage eleven. Now, the next sprint chance immediately delivers a second victory, that is just amazing! If I am the best sprinter in this Tour? I think there are some really good sprinters here. Maybe, I proved to be the most consistent one, but in any case, today I showed to be the best.”

GROENEWEGEN 3° NELLA 16a TAPPA DEL TOUR A NIMES

Medical update Jakob Fuglsang

Due to a crash in stage 16 of the Tour de France, Jakob Fuglsang had to abandon the race and was brought to the organizations medical truck. The results of the examinations: Heavy contusions and abrasions of his hand, arms, and knees. Radiography showed no fractures. There will follow more examinations in the next days to decide the expected time of recovery.

“I’m really disappointed about leaving the Tour de France this way, but there was too much pain to continue. Somebody crashed in front of me and there was no way to avoid it, so I crashed over my handlebar. My hand directly swallowed up and I could barely stand on my feet, I directly knew my Tour would finish here. I was very motivated for the final week and I was ready to battle for a higher position in the GC. That this has to be the way of missing out on this battle, is just very disappointing. Now all the focus will be on recovering, both physically as mentally, because the Tour was a big goal after my wins in Liége and the Dauphiné.”

Tour de France #16: Lars Bak in the breakaway

Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal) picked up his 2nd Tour de France stage win, by taking the stage 16 mass sprint finish in Nimes. Elia Viviani (Deceuninck-Quickstep) was 2nd and Dylan Groenewegen (Team Jumbo-Visma) finished 3rd.

Stage 16 of the Tour de France was a generally flat loop around Nimes. It was also the final opportunity before Paris, for the sprint teams to have a go at a stage win.

Lars Bak from Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka was hoping to catch the main sprint teams off guard and infiltrated the main break of the day. Bak and his 4 fellow escapees pushed the peloton all the way to the final 2.5km before they were eventually caught.

Edvald Boasson Hagen and Reinardt Janse van Rensburg then tried to take their opportunity in the sprint but the technical finish made it difficult to get into an opportune position, going up against the bigger sprint trains.

Boasson Hagen, slightly boxed in against the barriers, was not able to truly get his sprint going until it was too late and went on to cross the line in 12th position with Janse van Rensburg in 16th.

Unfortunately, a crash just outside of the 3km to go mark caught out Roman Kreuziger. Our Czech climber chased frantically to the line and would finish a minute down on the stage winner. However, due to Jakob Fuglsang (Team Astana) crashing out of the Tour earlier on today, Kreuziger remains in 14th overall as the Tour now head into the Alps.

"It was nice to have Lars out there in front today. Roman, myself and most of the team actually were riding near the front for most of the day. In the final there were a few crashes and we were involved, so I hope all the guys got through them okay. In the sprint, I was actually feeling good but I never really got to open up. I am disappointed in myself to miss such an opportunity but we will keep trying." - Edvald Boasson Hagen
