Another one excellent performance by Rui Costa, who fought hard in the thrilling final part of the 3rd stage of the Tour of Oman, being close to obtain his second seasonal victory (photo De Voecht/PN/Bettini).
Team UAE's captain was 2nd at the end of the stage which started from Sultan Qaboos University and finished in Quriyat on the summit of a 2 km hill: he was preceded by the young Danish rider Andersen.
The bunch approached the finall ascent after having neutralized the main breakaway of 6 riders.
Team UAE once again had completed a perfect work in supporting Rui Costa in view of the climb, so the Portuguese cyclist was in the best possible conditions for battling for a top result.
Arredondo gave a go in the early meters of the climb, however he was soon caught and distanced by De Plus, who led the race until the final sector of the climb, chased by the group of the favourites, in which there were Rui Costa and Ait el Abdia.
When De Plus was caught, Andersen attacked and he exploited a perfect timing for obtaining the victory, preceding for few meters Rui Costa (2nd) and Hermans (3rd).
Thanks to the second position in the stage, Rui Costa reduced the gap in the general classification to the leader Hermans: now the gap is 2".
"Today my feelings were even better than yesterday and the support from the team was as usual impessive - Rui Costa explained - The final hill was covered at a very intense pace, it was difficult to go clear, that's why the timing became the key factor which, unfortunately, prevented me to obtain the victory.
However, I feel that this second place is an additional confirmation of my good shape, I'm happy I'm constant in my performances. It would be great to obtain a top results in order to thank my team mates and the sponsors, I'm giving my best, however I'm aware also that there are many competitive opponents".

Un'altra tappa dal finale intenso e un'altra prestazione di spessore da parte di Rui Costa, 2° anche nella 3^frazione del Tour of Oman (foto De Voecht/PN/Bettini).
La corsa, scattata dalla Sultan Qaboos University, si è conclusa dopo 162 km a Quriyat, al termine di una ascesa di 2 km di lunghezza.
E' stata proprio la salita finale a offrire uno spettacolo di intensità ciclistica, con Rui Costa ancora una volta tra i protagonsiti.
Il gruppo è arrivato compatto all'imbocco della salita, dopo aver neutralizzato la fuga di 6 corridori che aveva condotto la gara.
Perfetto anche in questa occasione il lavoro del Team UAE nel condurre Rui Costa a prendere la salita in ottima posizione.
I primi metri di ascesa hanno visto l'allungo di Arredondo, presto raggiunto e superato da De Plus, capace di mantenere fino all'ultimo tratto di salita un margine sul gruppetto di 30 inseguitori che, metro dopo metro, è andato assottigliandosi.
Con De Plus nel mirino, il giovane danese Andersen ha prodotto una decisa accelerazione, il cui tempismo è stato premiato con la vittoria, vanificando il comunque intenso tentativo di Rui Costa di rimonta.
La seconda piazza d'onore consecutiva ha portato il campione del mondo di Firenze 2013 ad avvicinarsi in classifica generale al leader Hermans, oggi 3°: Rui Costa è secondo a 2" dal belga.
"Oggi ho avuto sensazioni ancora migliori rispetto a ieri, mentre il lavoro della squadra in mio favore si è mantenuto sullo stesso fantastico consueto livello - ha spiegato Rui Costa - La salita finale è stata percorsa con un rimto molto intenso, c'è stato poco margine per inventarsi qualcosa, di conseguenza il tempismo è stato un fattore decisivo che, purtroppo, non mi ha premiato.
Considero comunque questo secondo posto come un'ulteriore conferma di una buona condizione, mi fa piacere riuscire ad avere continuità. Sarebbe bello poter ripagare il lavoro dei compagni con un successo gratificante anche per gli sponsor: l'impegno è sempre massimo ma, come dimostrato anche dalla tappa di oggi, la concorrenza è ampia".
