Thibau Nys strikes again at GP des Kantons Aargau

Less than two weeks after claiming his first professional win on the road, Thibau Nys tasted glory again at the GP des Kantons Aargau, a one-day race in Switzerland. The parcours matched Nys’ punchy sprint perfectly with seven laps of a hilly circuit on the menu. Despite this, Trek-Segafredo, perhaps underestimated, was able to save their energies when other teams chased the early breakaway. Instead, the team led by Nys stayed close to the front, avoiding danger but out of the wind. When Fisher-Black (UAE) attacked on the penultimate lap, Trek-Segafredo used their strength in numbers to reel him in and set up Nys for the sprint. The young Belgian was perfectly delivered to the front of the peloton by Filippo Baroncini, a rider on the up after a difficult spring. With 200 meters to go, Nys launched his sprint, with no one able to match his punch on the drag to the line.

Reaction from Thibau Nys:

“It’s unbelievable. If you had told me before the season I wouldn’t have believed you. I’m fully aware that it will go with ups and downs in the future but I can only enjoy from the moments we have right now. I’m really grateful for the opportunities that the Team gave me and I’m happy to finish it off already for the second time this year. It’s like living on a cloud and I hope I can keep it going.

We had a really strong team with different options in the final. Quinn didn’t have the day he hoped for but on another day he could have done a strong attack in the last lap. Also Baro (Filippo Baroncini) had the opportunity. We came with a plan that could have gone a lot of different ways, but in the end I felt really good and I told the Team I would try to survive over the last climb and that if it came to a sprint and they placed me in a good position then I had a good chance of winning. I felt really confident going into the sprint. I told Baro to go third or fourth into the last corner and then sprint all out, and then I could finish it off. It was like something out of a book, everything went perfectly in the last kilometer. Also, Tony did a perfect job to get us in the best position in the last 500 meters. Baro launched the sprint and with 200 to go I was in the wheel and already felt like I would win. It feels amazing!”
