SEASON 2022
ION IZAGIRRE,
JOINS COFIDIS TEAM !

Cofidis is very proud to welcome a three-time Spanish champion, winner of stages in each of the three Grand Tours (Tour de France, Vuelta, Giro), into its ranks. The 32-year-old Ion Izagirre, who has signed for one season, will strengthen the team's contingent of experienced riders alongside Guillaume Martin and will also be Cofidis' leader in certain stages of the competitions to follow.

ION IZAGIRRE EN BRIEF
Spanish 🇪🇸, 32 years old
1.73 m, 60 kg
12 seasons with the professionals
1 year contract with Cofidis (2022)
15 victories
14 participations in Grand Tours: 7 Tour de France, 4 Vuelta, 3 Giro
21 participations in the Classics.

He is one of those experienced cyclists whose name is known by everyone in the peloton. Ion Izagirre, 32 years old, with 12 years as a professional rider, has built up a solid record of success over the seasons, having ridden for Euskatel-Euskadi, Movistar, Bahrain Merida and Astana. He is one of those rare riders who have already won the three major Tours.

Many prestigious victories

Ion notably won the 20th stage of the Tour de France in 2016 between Megève and Morzine. "This is the biggest victory of my career," he admits. He also won the Giro, between Limone sul Garda and Faizes (16th stage, in 2012).

At the Tour of Spain, he won the team time trial (in 2019) and a mountain stage between Biescas and Aramon Formigal (in 2020). He has also distinguished himself in the Spanish championships, winning the road race (2014) and the time-trial twice (in 2016 and 2021).

A new leader and a valuable reinforcement

Ion Izagirre does not hide his enthusiasm about joining the Cofidis team. Close to Bingen Fernandez, team manager, and the Herrada brothers, the Basque hopes to help the team grow. He will be an important reinforcement in the Big Tours, alongside Guillaume Martin and Jesus Herrada. This will give the team a leader in complementary areas, especially in the one-week stage races.

The arrival of Ion is another illustration of the ambitious character of Cofidis. The team is based on two strong axes: supporting young riders to help them shine and trusting experienced riders, capable of making a difference in races and winning them.

 THEY SAID

Guillaume Martin

Ion IZAGIRRE : "I am particularly happy to join Cofidis. Changing a team is always a special feeling: you know that everything will be new, that you have to recreate your routines. I am lucky to have good friends at Cofidis like Bingen (Fernandez) and the Herrada brothers. It is a French team but I think it is also a Spanish team! (laughs). More seriously, it's a great team, with a rich history and great riders. As we agreed with Cédric (Vasseur), I will have a double role in the team.

The first will be to support Guillaume Martin and Jesus Herrada in the big Tours. And at the same time, in the one-week stage races, I could also take on the role of leader. For example, I'm very keen to perform well at the Tour of the Basque Country."

Cédric VASSEUR, general manager: "The arrival of Ion Izagirre is an excellent news for the whole Cofidis team. He is a very talented rider. He has experience in all the major races and is one of those rare cyclists who has already won the three major Tours. With Ion Izagirre and Guillaume Martin, we will be able to stand out on different levels in the UCI World Tour. The Cofidis team continues to grow with the objective of shining at the highest level and on all terrains."
