Enrico Gasparotto, il vincitore domenica scorsa dell'Amstel Gold Race è 5°, migliore degli italiani, 9a oiazza invece per il toscano Diego Ulissi.

Valverde, leyenda y póker en Huy

20 de abril de 2016 | Mur de Huy - La segunda prueba del Tríptico de las Ardenas ya tiene un rey: Alejandro Valverde. El murciano acudía a la cita en busca de su cuarto –tercer consecutivo- título (2006, 2014 y 2015) y, finalmente, lo logró. Con esta victoria se convierte en el máximo ganador histórico de la prueba, un triunfo que enlaza con las dos últimas victorias en la Vuelta a Castilla y León. Hat-trick en un inicio de temporada que supone una tremenda inyección de moral del cara al Giro de Italia.

Desde el inicio de la Flèche Wallone (126 km, Manche en Famenne – Mur de Huy), el equipo dirigido por José Luis Arrieta supo leer y controlar en todo momento la carrera. Dani Moreno, Carlos Betancur e Imanol Erviti escoltaban al murciano, mientras Rubén Fernández, Giovanni Visconti y Rory Sutherland endurecían los últimos kilómetros hasta dar caza al británico Stephen Cummings (DDD). Otro hombre clave fue Ion Izagirre, desatado y “sin cadena” atacó a Jungles (EQS) sin desatender todos los amagos de ataques.

Como de costumbre y a diferencia de la Amstel Gold Race y Liège-Bastogne-Liège, la Flèche estaba abocada a decidirse en lo alto de su cota más decisiva, el Muro de Huy (204 m): 1,3 kilómetros al 9,6% de pendiente media, con rampas que alcanzan el 26%. Características para escaladores explosivos con buen sprint cuesta arriba. Y ahí llegó bien posicionado Valverde junto con Purito Rodríguez (KAT) y Daniel Martin (EQS). Con inteligencia, soltura y contundencia dictó sentencia el ‘Bala’, ni siquiera el francés Julian Alaphilippe (EQS) le intimidó en el sprint final.

La próxima cita con las Ardenas será este domingo con la Liège-Bastogne-Liège, carrera donde Valverde, de nuevo, defiende título y buscará su cuarto entorchado.

Alaphilippe and Martin finish on Flèche Wallonne podium A great ride of the team saw Etixx – Quick-Step place two riders inside the top three of the prestigious Belgian Classic 20-Apr-2016: Once again, Flèche Wallonne was all about the Mur de Huy. After a very fast start, which saw an escape form only inside the second hour, the race followed the traditional pattern of the past years, with the break building an advantage of a couple of minutes, before the favourites’ teams came at the head of the peloton to control things. As expected, the escapees were caught before the real action kicked off, with around 20 kilometers to go, triggering other attacks from the bunch. First to move was Luxembourg champion Bob Jungels, who was joined by Ion Izagirre (Movistar) and Tim Wellens (Lotto-Soudal). The trio opened a gap of 20 seconds on the chasers, but Cofidis and Tinkoff brought them back with less than three kilometers to go, before Mur de Huy. On the final hill of the day – 1300 meters, 9.6% average gradient – the Etixx – Quick-Step duo of Dan Martin and Julian Alaphilippe made its way to the front and played the old 1-2, gunning for the win in the race which this year was celebrating its 80th edition. The Irishman launched his attack and forced the others to chase, before Julian – who was second last season at Flèche Wallonne – came to the forefront and accelerated as a response to the attack of Alejandro Valverde (Movistar). Despite putting in a brave and solid effort, Julian finished runner-up once again, just ahead of his teammate, making Etixx – Quick-Step the first team in 13 years to place two riders on the podium of the Belgian one-day race. For the second time in the top three of Flèche Wallonne, Daniel Martin talked about the team’s strategy on Wednesday and tried to see the bright side of things: “We wanted to go for the victory, but second and third on the podium is still a great result for the team. We knew that we can’t beat Alejandro on the last 100 meters, so we tried to anticipate with 300 meters to go. We rode aggressively and the tactic was for Julian to stay in the wheel of Valverde, while I tried to go a little bit from afar. I have a very good relationship with Julian and we work very well together. We have to be happy, but we’re also a bit sad, because we came here to get the win.” “I felt good throughout the day, rode with confidence and stayed close to Dan during the race. Our tactic was to have Dan start his effort early, because he has the power for such an attack, while I waited behind Valverde. Dan was really incredible and did a fantastic job on the climb. My legs were in pain after a really hard race, always up and down, without any respite. Fifth place for Enrico Gasparotto in Flèche Wallonne Wanty-Groupe Gobert rode this Wednesday the Flèche Wallonne (1.UWT) with its mythical climb of the Mur de Huy. The winner of the Amstel Gold Race Enrico Gasparotto was again among the best riders and took the fifth place. The Spaniard Alejandro Valverde won the race and becomes the race record holder. "It is my best result in the Flèche Wallonne. I'm obviously satisfied. This is the Ardennes classic that suits me the least," Enrico Gasparotto said.  To support Enrico Gasparotto, the rest of the team lined up with Jérôme Baugnies, Guillaume Martin, Frederik Veuchelen, Gaëtan Bille, Marco Minnaard, Mark McNally and Björn Thurau. Not present in the breakaway of ten riders, the riders protected our team captain Enrico Gasparotto. "Just like in the Amstel Gold Race, the team worked really well for me", Enrico Gasparotto continues.  On the penultimate climb of the Mur de Huy, our rider Björn Thurau tried to attack with three other riders. He already did it in the Amstel Gold Race. "I tried to make the race harder. I wanted to have three or four strong guys with me and to create a gap. It didn't work but I showed that I'm in good shape", Björn Thurau said.  The team Movistar controlled everything. The peloton was all together at two kilometers from the finish. The decision was made, as every year, on the last climb of the Mur de Huy. Always careful in the first 10-15 places of the bunch, Enrico Gasparotto avoided any trouble during the race and began the Mur de Huy in the best conditions. "The team did a very good job. I can't complain about anything" Enrico Gasparotto gave everything to fight with specialists but couldn't do anything against Alejandro Valverde. Finally, the Italian took the fifth place of the race. "We wanted the best possible result today. The podium was too strong on the climb. Enrico Gasparotto showed he had recovered well and it promises for Liège-Bastogne-Liège which suits him better", Hilaire Van der Schueren concludes. Wanty-Groupe Gobert will participate on Sunday in the Doyenne, Liège-Bastogne-Liège. The line-up will be unveiled soon.
