MATEJ MOHORIC IS 4TH AT LIÈGE-BASTOGNE-LIÈGE

Liège (Belgium), Sunday, October 4th – At the thrilling finish of the 106th edition of the Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Team Bahrain McLaren rider Matej Mohoric took an excellent top five placing.
With an impressive effort, the Slovenian rider managed to close the gap to the 4 leaders, that went away on the last climb of the day, the Roche-aux-Faucons.
Mohoric crossed the line in 5th place, that then turned into 4th as the jury relegated Alaphilippe for an irregular sprint. The World Champion also celebrated too soon, in the sprint won by Primoz Roglic, ahead of Marc Hirshi and Tadej Pogacar.

Matej Mohoric comments his brilliant performance in the oldest of the five Monuments: “I felt good today. I think I did a good job with positioning. My teammates worked well too and they gave me a chance on this race. After the Tour de France, I was working for this goal and I’m proud I could get something out of this, although I got cramps in the finale and I couldn’t do a good sprint. Anyway, I’m satisfied with this result”.

Team Bahrain McLaren Gorazd Stangelj is also very proud of the boys’ performance in this edition of ‘La Doyenne’: “The team has to be praised for today’s job. In particular Mohoric and Kevin Inkelaar. He helped more than 200km and for a newcomer in such a tough race, it’s something great. Matej proved that it was the right decision to select him for the Liège-Bastogne-Liège and he showed great form after the Tour de France. That repays some bad luck with had with Mikel Landa, who got a mechanical problem and Damiano Caruso, who abandoned due to a crash. For sure with them, we would have more riders in the finale to do even better”.

Damiano Caruso was involved in a crash with about 80km to go. The Italian rider, who was in great shape and very motivated for this Liège, was forced to abandon as the pain in his right hand was too strong.Damiano suffered a blunt trauma” Team Doctor Andrea Andreazzoli explains “We put a semi-rigid bandage and tomorrow he will undergo x-ray once back in Italy. Kevin Inkelaar hit the deck too, but he suffered only abrasions on hip and knee”.
