MATEJ MOHORIÄŒ TAKES SECOND PLACE AT THE CLÁSICA SAN SEBASTIÁN.
A hard classics race of San Sebastián took part in unbelievable rainy and harsh conditions for this part of the summer. Nelson Powless (EF Education-Nippo) surprisingly took the victory in a photo finish three-man sprint in San Sebastián, beating Matej Mohorič (Team Bahrain Victorious) and Mikkel Honoré (Deceuninck-QuickStep).

Before that final challenge, another EF Education-Nippo – Bahrain Victorious battle happened on the longest climb of the day – the Erlaitz ascent – between Mikel Landa and Simon Carr. Landa jumped at his favourite place as he did on the last Itzulia race in April, but later on, Carr showed more strength overtaking Mikel Landa at the top of the climb. Later on, Powless, Mohorič and three other riders overtook the leaders and controlled the last 35 km after the descent to the coastal course towards San Sebastian. Having eyes all on each other towards the photo finish sprint.

Matej Mohorič: “Today was a tough race as always at the one-day classics. Roads were very wet and slippery because of the rain. We had to be at the front, especially at the descents, and we managed to do a split with Mikel Landa, me, Mark Padun, and Stevie Williams at the first part. Mikel attacked at the steep climb but didn’t get enough advantage to stay away. So I counter-attacked at the descent and went away with some other guys. We managed to be in advantage before the last climb. Over that ascent, I went over with the best guys. I misjudged one corner and almost crashed at the last descent, but happily with any consequences. Then I stayed with the leaders, and we fought at the sprint to the finish line. I took second place. I think Powless was stronger today, so I am happy with the result. It was the best I could’ve done today. It is a pity I didn’t win, but hopefully next time”.
