Marc Hirschi took an emphatic win on stage 3 of the Tour de Hongrie today, arriving solo after going clear on the steep final climb with -2km to go.
The 24 year old puncheur sealed his first win of the season in fine style, going clear with Ben Tulett (Ineos-Grenadiers) on the lower slopes before picking his moment to perfection and attacking the British rider to take victory.
The winning margin was enough for Hirschi to take the yellow jersey heading into stage 4 tomorrow on the queen stage from Martonvásár to Dobogókő (206.4km).
Hirschi: “ We went full-gas into the bottom of the last climb for positioning. Then Ineos and Tulett went very early so I followed him and then I knew over the top of the climb if I had something left I had to go. Everybody was on the limit and small differences in the mind can make a big difference in that situation. It’s really nice to get my first win of the season and I’m really happy. The race is not over, tomorrow is a hard day so we’ll give it a good shot .”
