Alternative racing up Yorkshire's peaks

Morton to line up at legendary 3 Peaks this Sunday

Looking up, the line of riders pushing their bikes up the steep hillsides snakes out of sight, and there’s about as much running in this one as a 10k. Perfect. When one thinks of a ‘cross race, course tape and fast laps come to mind, but not here — this is a long day out in the wilderness. The 3 Peaks is a much-loved cyclocross challenge in Yorkshire, England that bills itself as the hardest cyclocross race in the world. That’s probably true, since most ‘cross races don’t tackle three peaks: Ingleborough, Whernside, and Pen-y-ghent. The crowd is thick with riders of all kinds, from the fleet to those simply hoping to finish. Now, the real question: How will first-timer Lachlan Morton fare Sunday?

The tools for 3 Peaks

A mixed terrain 61-kilometer journey through England’s iconic Yorkshire Dales traversing the three peaks of Ingleborough, Whernside, and Pen-y-ghent, the event pits riders against a wide variety of terrain – with a requirement that they use a cyclocross bike. After all, riding with drop bars and no suspension was good enough for racers in the event’s first editions in the 1960s, and to this day, organizers embrace the heritage those early racers established. We can’t wait.

 UK cyclocross tradition

3 Peaks Cyclo-Cross isn't just any old 'cross race. Among the world's first off-road bike races, 3 Peaks is a truly unique event with a long history of pitting athletes against terrain that is as distinctive as it is treacherous. The event was first raced in 1961, and today’s race remains steeped in the beautiful traditions it was founded upon. Largely unchanged in the last 50 years, it’s a race that starts in the garden of a pub and puts exploration of terrain and self at a premium. Perfect. "There's not another race like it,” Lachlan Morton says. “It's a race that has absolutely captured my imagination."
