Cyclassics Hamburg: Giacomo Nizzolo sprints to a good 3rd place podium finish

Elia Viviani (Deceuninck-Quickstep) sprinted to the victory at the UCI World Tour Cyclassics Hamburg. Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal) finished in 2nd place and Giacomo Nizzolo placed 3rd for our Dimension Data for Qhubeka squad.

The Cyclassics Hamburg provided yet another exciting finish, with a select group of 40-odd riders arriving at the finish line together. The selection was made on the short but sharp Waseberg climb, which peaked for the final time with 16km to go.

Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka were in a fairly good position as our two key riders for today's race, Nizzolo and Reinardt Janse van Rensburg, were both part of this selection.

Most of the pre-race favourites were also still part of the front group though but at least with fewer riders, there was some space to move up in the final. Nizzolo used this to his advantage and moved up in the final kilometer onto the wheel of Ewan, who was following Viviani.

Viviani kicked off of his leadout man's wheel in the final 200m, and his speed could not be matched. Ewan was 2nd and Nizzolo 3rd across the line, to complete the podium. Janse van Rensburg was also in the mix, crossing the line in 12th place.

"It was hard and fast day because the early breakaway got quite a big gap so we had to chase really fast. Hamburg is one of my favourite races though, so I just had to stay calm and pick the right moment to move up. This sprint is always a lottery but we got a 3rd place and I think it is a good result for the day." - Giacomo Nizzolo
