SECOND PLACE FOR BUITRAGO AT SAUDI TOUR
The 2nd edition of the Saudi Tour is in the books, with Bahrain Victorious securing a stage win and 2nd place overall. It was the young Columbian Santiago Buitrago who took his first-ever victory, which moved him into the Leaders jersey on stage 2 of the 5 stage race.
On the Queen stage(stage 4), the battle for the overall ignited, and unfortunately, Buitrago was caught in the cross-winds and lost time and lost the lead, despite his valiant effort to limit losses.
Despite losing Ahmed Madan and Fred Wright to injury early on, there were positive signs for the season with Bahrain Victorious debutants Gradek, Maciejuk and Sutterlin working well. At the same time, Jonathan Milan picked up valuable experience on the three sprint stages.
DS Franco Pellizotti was pleased with the performance: “For sure, I’m happy with Saudi Tour. The riders arrived in very good condition, and they were riding very well all five days. We finished this tour with a stage victory and second in GC with Santi. Finally, it was unlucky for sure, as we lost the jersey, but that was also due to losing two riders. So if we had two more riders yesterday, for sure, we wouldn’t lose the jersey, but this is cycling. Overall I’m happy with how the team rode, and we see the positive for the next races.”
Second in GC Santiago Buitrago: “I’m super happy with the second place overall in the Saudi Tour and all the work made by the staff and my fellow riders. Now it’s time to prepare for the next races. Thanks to all the people that are supporting us.”
