BRONZE WORLD CUP MEDAL IN RECORD TIME
Roy van den Berg, Matthijs Büchli and Theo Bos take home the bronze medal at the Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Minsk, Belarus
November 1, 2019 - Roy van den Berg, Matthijs Büchli and Theo Bos have won the bronze medal at the team sprint event of the Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Minsk, Belarus. With a record time for BEAT Cycling Club of 43.018 they managed to BEAT the French team in the battle for bronze.
In the qualifying round, BEAT rode a time of 43.401. WIth this time, Van den Berg, Büchli and Bos comfortably qualified for the first round with the fourth time. The eight fastest teams were allowed to race the first round. In the first round BEAT had to race the German team, who qualified as the fifth team.
To beat the Germans and deserve a spot in the final, the team had to go even faster. With a time of 43.280 the Germans were beaten, but in the other heats the Dutch team and Great-Britain rode an even faster time. BEAT was placed in the battle for third, where France was waiting as their opponent.
The French had been quicker the entire day, so they were also the favourites in the final battle. Van den Berg however opened very rapid. The French closed in on BEAT in the second lap, but could not repulse on a solid last lap by Büchli. The BEAT sprint team finished in a time of 43.018. This not only resulted in the bronze medal, but also a record time for BEAT Cycling Club.
Matthijs Büchli reacts:
"I had a great day. riding the first World Cup with BEAT. Theo thought of a great change in the strategy for the final. I was changed to third rider while Theo filled my spot as second rider. It caused a gain of two tenths giving us a new record time for the club. We're feeling great after the competition, I believe we can go even faster in Glasgow next week. I'm delighted to be on the podium today."

1 november 2019 - Roy van den Berg, Matthijs Büchli en Theo Bos wonnen vandaag het brons op de team sprint bij de Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Minsk, Wit-Rusland. Met een clubrecord van 43,018 bleven zij Frankrijk voor in de strijd om het brons.
In de kwalificatieronde reed BEAT een tijd van 43.401. Hiermee kwalificeerden Van den Berg, Büchli en Bos zich als vierde comfortabel voor de eerste ronde, waar de snelste acht landen in actie kwamen. In deze eerste ronde moest het team sprint team het opnemen tegen Duitsland, dat zich als vijfde gekwalificeerd had.
Om dit land te verslaan en een plek in de finale te bemachtigen moest de gashendel nog iets extra open getrokken worden. Met 43.280 werden de Duitsers ruim verslagen, maar in de andere heats reden het Nederlandse team en de Britten een snellere tijd, waardoor BEAT het in de strijd om brons op mocht nemen tegen Frankrijk.
De Fransen waren het hele toernooi al sneller dan Van den Berg, Büchli en Bos en dus ook favoriet in het onderlinge duel. Van den Berg opende echter razendsnel, waarna het Franse team in de tweede ronde nog heel dicht bij kon kruipen maar uiteindelijk niet opgewassen was tegen de ijzersterke laatste ronde van Büchli. De BEAT baanploeg kwam tot een tijd van 43.018, wat naast de bronzen medaille ook een nieuw clubrecord oplevert!

“Het was een mooie dag, de eerste wereldbeker met BEAT. Theo kwam met een mooie wijziging in de strategie in de finale. Ik ging op plek drie rijden, hij op plek twee. Dat levert ons nog twee tienden op waardoor we een nieuw clubrecord rijden. We hebben er alle drie een goed gevoel aan over gehouden, ik denk dat we volgende week in Glasgow nog een stukje harder kunnen. Ik ben heel blij dat we hier op het podium staan.”
