A peloton of 415 riders, ready to take on the most challenging and prestigious course in the history of the Haute Route Pyrenees, has arrived in Anglet Basque Coast to register for the first edition of the three-event 2015 Haute Route series.

As storm clouds gathered on the distant Pyreneen peaks, Anglet proved a dramatic setting as competitors completed their final preparations in the Race Village situated on the resort’s windswept Atlantic coast.

Despite the weather, an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation filled the race village before the riders took part in a non-timed parade through the centre of the town. Crowds lined the roadside illustrating how Anglet has taken the Haute Route to its heart.

The peloton rolls off for the official start at dawn tomorrow, tackling 19,900 vertical metres of climbing over a total distance of 812km. There are seven timed and ranked stages with an unsurpassed level of professional race support accompanying riders en route to the finish in Toulouse on August 21st.

Justifying the event’s billing as the world’s highest and toughest cyclosportive, the 2015 Haute Route Pyrenees features climbs steeped in cycling history including the majestic Col du Tourmalet, the Col de Peyresourde and Hautacam.

Haute Route event manager, Julie Royer said: “We couldn’t ask for a better location to start this three-week adventure. On behalf of all the competitors, organisation team and our partners, I thank Anglet Basque Coast for their incredible hospitality.”

Mayor of Anglet Basque Coast, Claude Olive, said: “This may well prove to be the most formidable cycling challenge staged in the region. Amid the suffering I hope our riders can pause to admire the wild beauty of the Pyrenees and I wish them the very best of luck for the challenge ahead.”

The Haute Route Pyrenees forms the first leg of three weeks of amateur racing across the Pyrenees, (French) Alps and Dolomites Swiss Alps. A select group of 28 riders will attempt the formidable Triple Crown, riding all three Haute Route events back-to-back.

The Haute Route Alps starts in Nice on August 23rd and finishes in Geneva on August 30th. The final leg – the Haute Route Dolomites Swiss Alps – runs from Geneva to Venice finishing on September 6th.
