Lorena Wiebes fastest in first bunch sprint Giro Donne

"Glad I could finish it off”

In the third stage of the Giro Donne, Lorena Wiebes proved fastest in the bunch sprint. The European champion was perfectly brought by her teammates and sprinted unapproachably to her 8th individual win of the season, ahead of Marianne Vos and Chloe Dygert. "As the European champion, I always feel the pressure in the final. We were in control all day. Then I just want to finish it too," Wiebes said.

The third stage of the Giro Donne was marked in red in advance by Lorena Wiebes. On paper, this was a sprint stage. So Team SD Worx controlled the early breakaway. At 12 kilometres from the end, everything came together again, after which the Dutch WorldTeam chose the right moment to put on the sprint. Wiebes: "We came quite late, but I had full confidence in my train. Elena Cecchini and Barbara Guarischi brought me perfectly. Barbara dropped me off behind the corner section, after which I only had to take care of the last straight. After which I went full on."

Nobody got next to the European champion in the sprint, who supremely took her third stage win ever at the Giro Donne. "I'm happy with this stage win," Wiebes said with relief. "Team SD Worx was super strong today. The whole team had handled the climb well and I was perfectly surrounded all day. We were in control. When your team does such a good job, you want to thank them with a stage win. Then you don't want to fail. I'm happy to be back in the Giro Donne."
