Bronzini - Bastianelli - Confalonieri: the "Tricolore" flag shines at the finish line in Legnano, at the end of a frightening stage.
The 97.550 km of the stage started in Rescaldina were mostly on the roads of the Coppa Bernocchi were run at high speed, with a breakaway that included Alena Amialiusik (Canyon-SRAM), Anna Ceoloni (Servetto-Footon-Alurecycling), Rozanne Slik (Liv-Plantur), Audrey Cordon (Wiggle High5), Malgorzata Jasinska (Alè-Cipollini), Lex Albrecht (BePink) and Ana Maria Covrig (Inpa-Bianchi), with the National Champion of Romania who passed first on the climb of Gornate Superiore (Category 3). In the second part, the peloton tried to accelerate, but the attacks continued in the front: Amialiusik and Covrig remained alone but Ceoloni joined them again with Slik close to the passage at the finish line in Legnano.

Ana Covrig didn't give up and attacked at the last kilometer, the peloton was just behind her and in the bunch sprint Giorgia Bronzini has been the fastest, beating other two italians, Marta Bastianelli (Alè-Cipollini) and Maria Giulia Confalonieri (Lensworld-Zannata), who was second in the sprint in Lovere.

Nothing changes in the General Classification: Megan Guarnier remains in Pink with only one stage to go: her advantage is 34'' from her teammate Evelyn Stevens (Boels Dolmans) and 1'53'' from Anna Van der Breggen (Rabo-Liv)

Declarations of Giorgia Bronzini: "This victory is important because the National Coach Dino Salvoldi called me to be part of our team at the Olympic Games in Rio. This event will demonstrate that the Italian Women National Cycling Team will completely honour the National Jersey.

Note for the press: the press conference of the fifth Jersey Winners of the 27th Giro Rosa is fixed at the end of the stage in Verbania - Pallanza.

Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling’s Giorgia Bronzini took her second victory of the 2016 Giro d’Italia Femminile, in the eighth stage between Rescaldina and Legnano, as the race finished in a bunch sprint once again. The former two time road Word Champion beat compatriot, and fellow former rainbow jersey, Marta Bastianelli (Alé-Cipollini) in a close sprint for the line, with fellow Italian Maria Giulia Confalonieri (Lensworld-Zannata) taking third place just behind them.

“With about 400 or 350 to go Tiff Cromwell [Canyon-SRAM] started her sprint because her train was done, so she sprinted quite early,” Bronzini explained. “The sprint was just after a corner, but it was really fast. I just went out in the last hundred metres, looking out for Bastianelli on my left, but she was in the longer side of the road, so for me it was okay; it was good.”

The 99km stage featured a relatively flat profile, but the rolling Lombardy roads saw a group of nine riders get away, which included Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling’s French Time Trial Champion Audrey Cordon-Ragot. With nobody in the group a threat to the top of the general classification, it looked as though it was going to be left to contest the stage victory, but they were eventually closed down.

“It was a really, really, really fast race, and when some climbing started there was a breakaway with Audrey in,” Bronzini explained. “We were pretty happy for that, to give Audrey a chance.

“Then at some point Liv-Plantur started chasing back. We didn’t know why, so we asked them why, and they said it was because they wanted to save the 11th place of Leah Kirchmann in the general, because there was [Canyon-SRAM’s Alena] Amialiusik in front.

“When the gap was down to 20 seconds they stopped, and that’s when Rabo-Liv took the lead because - I think - they wanted to pull the sprint for [Lucinda] Brand. By then there were only three in front, and Rabo - and also Canyon - didn’t stop.”

With teammate Cordon-Ragot in the breakaway ahead, Bronzini was able to organise herself and her Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling teammates in the approach to the coming sprint. Unfortunately, an incident with around 7km to go almost derailed the former World Champion’s train, but in choosing the right wheels to follow Bronzini was able to position herself perfectly.

“I was being led out by Elisa [Longo Borghini] and Chloe [Hosking] but unfortunately Chloe was forced onto a hole in the road and punctured a wheel, so I was just with Elisa,” Bronzini explained. “Elisa brought me on the Canyon leadout, and I stayed on Tiff Cromwell’s wheel; I just fought to have Tiff’s wheel.

“I’m really happy for the team, for the win again, and for the staff. I’m really really happy!”

The victory is the second of Bronzini’s Giro, and the fourth for Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling, following Hosking’s win on stage three, and Mara Abbott’s on stage five.

“It’s not really had, huh!” Bronzini laughed.

RESCALDINA (MI), 09/07/2016

RESCALDINA, 09/07/2016

GOOD MORNING FROM RESCALDINA
The final phase of the 27th Giro Rosa begins on the roads of Lombardia: The stage 8 begins from the Metallurgica Legnanese Factory in Rescaldina and it ends in Legnano after 97.550 km. The itinerary is very similar to the Coppa Bernocchi: it's mostly wavy, divided between the Provinces of Milan and Varese, and it comprehends a first part flat with a circuit in Parabiago (Intermediate Sprint - km 18.4) before entering in the Varesotto area. The hilliest phase is here, with the short climbs in Lonate Ceppino and Castiglione Olona (KOM in Gornate Superiore - Cat. 3 - 350 m)

The return in Legnano is through Carnago, Cairate and Gerenzano, to be in the final circuit to repeat one time after passing under the finish line in Largo Tosi. It should be the last chance for the sprinters, but the hilly itinerary can give a possibility to the breakaway.
