Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling’s Giorgia Bronzini finished in third place in the bunch sprint at the end of the sixth stage of the Giro d’Italia Femminile - the Giro Rosa - in Roseto degli Abruzzi. The former two-time road World Champion crossed the line behind Finnish Champion Lotta Lepistö (Cervélo-Bigla) at the end of a fast 116km circuit stage, with American Coryn Rivera (Sunweb) in second.
“I had a bit of trouble at the finish,” Bronzini said. “I was exactly on Rivera’s wheel and, just before the sprint started, Lepistö came and pushed me off it. I was too soon to start my sprint, but I had to start, and without a draft so for me it was a bit early. I started my sprint in third position and I finished in third position.
“I’m happy for the podium, of course, and it maybe the last chance we have in the Giro.”
Having won stage four with Belgian Champion Jolien D’hoore, stage six was to be Bronzini’s turn to be the protected sprinter. With the 116km made up of four laps of a 29km circuit, which featured a third category climb, the black and orange team was to keep its options open.
“Of course if it came to a bunch sprint the team was for me,” Bronzini explained. “But also the girls were allowed to go in the breakaways - and maybe work, depending on the composition of the break - but that didn't happen. Then there was a small break of three riders, but we just waited, because there were also other teams interested in the sprint.”
Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling’s Elisa Longo Borghini remains in second place in the general classification, and holds the Blue Jersey as Best Italian Rider. With more challenging stages to come, the black and orange team will be putting everything behind the Italian Champion.
“Now we are just focused to keep Elisa in position and hope that she can have some occasion to move up a bit,” Bronzini confirmed. “Now the focus will be to be around her, and to help her as much as we can.”
