VICTORY IN THE GIRO :  VICTOR LAFAY'S DAY OF GLORY HAS ARRIVED

At 25 the French rider won the 8th stage of the Giro as a solo rider on Saturday. This was the best performance of his career and his first victory in the professional category. The Cofidis team continues an incredible sequence with a third victory in three days!

He took time to savour. On the last stretch of Guardia Sanframondi, Victor Lafay rode alone. He stood up from his bike, fastened his Cofidis jersey before to raise his arms and revealed a radiant face. The feeling of living a unique moment, a dream for all professional riders: to win on the roads of the Grand Tour.

AN AGGRESSIVE AND DECISIVE ATTACK

The stage from Foggia was intense all the way until the end. It took more than 50 kilometres before the breakaway of the day was formed. There were 12 riders in this group. Victor, on his side, rode intelligently to save himself as much as possible and to stay as focused as possible. Unlike the other breakaways, he avoided making attacks. It was only with 2,2 km to go that he made his move as the road was rising one last time. This incisive attack allowed him to take the lead of the race and he kept it until the end.

Victor Lafay thus achieved the best result of his career, his first victory in the professional category. The Lyon-born rider, had already won the Stage of the Tour and the silver medal for young riders in 2018. Under the colours of Cofidis, the young climber has progressively gained in power. He discovered the demands of the big races last year, at the Vuelta. This year, he was able to finish 2nd in the 3rd stage of the Tour of Valencia where he also took the best young rider jersey.

Victor Lafay also gave Cofidis it’s 5th victory of the season. Which happens to be the 3rd consecutive victory after Christophe Laporte's success on Thursday at the Circuit de Wallonie and Jesus Herrada's success at the GP de Majorca. Finally, it is important to mention that Cofidis had not won the Giro for 11 years, since the victory of Damien Monier between Brunico and Pelo Terme in 2010.

THEY SAID

Victor Lafay

Victor LAFAY, 1er : « It's just incredible! It was a very hard day and it was not easy to get into the breakaway. When it started, the peloton left us 7 minutes, so we were able to recover a bit. I tried to be as concentrated as possible: I knew that there were no 'real' climbers in the breakaway. I attacked with less than 3 km to go and that allowed me to take the lead. I still can't believe it, it's completely crazy! »

Nicolas EDET : « That's great news for Victor and for the team. For the past week, we have been talking about victory with either Elia or myself. We know that Victor is a great talent who has understood that hard work will be rewarded. He is a serious rider who has gradually gained confidence. He has enormous capacities, power and he has everything to win more. To win in a grand tour is a dream for every rider. Congratulations to him! »

Jean-Luc JONROND, team manager : « It's great! There is a feeling of satisfaction, and this is a successful comeback for the Cofidis team on the Giro roads. The Cofidis team had not won the Giro since 11 years and the victory of Damien Monier. Despite a crash in the Boucles d'Ardèche, Victor was in a very good form and we sensed that he would have a great season. The team worked very well today as Nicolas Edet, Natnael Berhane and Rémy Rochas took turns to try to get into the breakaway. We had studied the final with Victor and he did a perfect race. To open his professional career with a victory in a grand tour stage is really exciting. And I am sure that it would be followed by many others! »

Cédric VASSEUR, general manager : « This is a wonderful day for Victor and Cofidis. This victory rewards the work of the whole team, riders and staff. It proves that the whole team is now capable of competing at the highest level. The objective for this Giro was to win a stage with Elia and other riders. The Giro is still long and I am sure we will have other opportunities to show ourselves. Three wins in three days: we couldn't have dreamt of anything better! »
