Rui Costa’s performance at the 17th stage of the Giro d’Italia secured UAE Team Emirates a podium position in Canazei whilst Jan Polanc successfully climbed up the General Classification standings to secure a placen in the top ten.
Pierre Rolland won the stage with Izagirre in third behind Rui Costa. Tom Dumoulin continues to retain the Maglia Rosa.
Commenting on his second place, Rui Costa said: “I missed the victory for the second time and it’s a pity because today my legs felt really good. I’m however very proud of the impressive team effort showen by UAE Team Emirates today, there were four of us in the main breakaway driving the pace of the leading group: myself, Polanc, Mohoric and Conti. Towards the end of the race there were a lot of attacks and it was not possible to keep up with them all. Overall I am happy with the results“.
Matej Mohoric, who crested the first climb solo, said of the team’s efforts: “I went clear of the peloton from the start and tried my best to help Polanc move up in the General Classification and supporr Rui to get the stage victory, which was unfortunatley won by Rolland. We are a strong team and I have not doubt that we will attack again“.
UAE Team Emirates worked together to push Polanc into thenth place in the GC.
Commenting on the results, the Slovenian rider said: “Right now my legs feel quite drained. I joined the breakaway because it was such a big group however it proved to be hard. Everybody was playing it safe after yesterdays’s dramatic stage and I really hope I didn’t overdo it today.
I thank my teammates for helping me move into the top ten of the General Classification“.

Rui 2° a Canazei, Polanc sale al 10° posto in classifica
Quattro coraggiosi cavalieri del’UAE Team Emirates, ovvero Mohoric, Rui Costa, Polanc e Conti, hanno cercato di compiere l’impresa di vincere la 17^tappa del Giro d’Italia (Tirano-Canazei, 219 km con le salite dell’Aprica, del Tonale e di Giovo) lanciandosi in una attacco da lontano.
Mohoric è uscito dal gruppo subito dopo il via, raggiunto sul Tonale dai compagni Rui Costa, Conti e Polanc e da altri 40 atleti.
Il gruppo ha concesso un buon margine e, grazie al grande lavoro di Mohoric, Rui Costa e Conti sono arrivati nel finale a giocarsi il successo di tappa (2° posto per Rui Costa, preceduto da Rolland, autore dell’allungo vincente ai -7 km), mentre Polanc ha potuto balzare al 10° posto della classifica generale, con un ritardo da Dumoulin aggiornato a 6’33”.
Rui Costa (foto Bettini): “Mi è sfuggita la vittoria per la seconda volta in questo Giro, mi spiace perché avevo ottime gambe e la squadra ha lavorato in maniera eccezionale, portando quattro corridori nella fuga principale.
Negli ultimi chilometri si sono susseguiti tanti attacchi, non era possibile seguirli tutti“.
Conti: “Volevamo essere a tutti i costi nelle fughe, la squadra ha corso bene e, personalmente, ho avvertito buone sensazioni dopo un periodo difficile. Mi sono messo nel finale a disposizione di Rui, dispiace che Rolland abbia colto il momento giusto per allungare“.
Polanc: “Quando ho visto che si stava formando un folto gruppo di fuggitivi, ho provato a cogliere l’occasione e mi sono unito agli attaccanti. Con questa azione ho guadagnato posizioni nella classifica generale, spero di non aver speso troppe energie e di avere buone gambe per domani“.
Mohoric: “Era una tappa adatta alle fughe, così non ho perso tempo e ho attaccato subito, trovandomi anche da solo in testa alla corsa. Ripreso dai primi inseguitori, ho dato il massimo per aiutare Rui Costa, Conti e Polanc per provare a raggiungere i rispettivi obiettivi. Peccato che Rui abbia trovato un Rolland perfetto, ma ci riproveremo ancora“.
