UAE Team Emirates’ Sacha Modolo crossed the finish line at the first stage of the 100th Giro d’Italia amongst the top five alongside Caleb Ewan (ORICA – Scott), Andre Greipel (Lotto Soudal) and Giacomo Nizzolo (Trek – Segafredo). Modolo was in great form, garnering a significant fifth place as Austrian Lukas Poestlberger (BORA – Hansgrohe) was victorious.
“I am pleased with the outcome of today’s stage,” says Modolo (photo Bettini, before the start). “Today’s stage was a good opportunity to try and clinch the Pink Jersey. Marcato supported me until Ferrari was able to launch me into a long sprint unfortunately it was a bit too late as Lukas Poestlberger (BORA – Hansgrohe) had closed the gap between him and the sprinters. I would like to congratulate Poestlberger for a fine performance. I am in good form and this is only the beginning. I am looking forward to the upcoming stages and would like to thank my team for all the support.”
Stage two is hillier than the opening day of the Giro; the riders start in Olbia with three long climbs and a flat finish of 1.8km on wide roads to Tortolì. Versione Italiana Giro d’Italia: Sacha Modolo è 5° nella tappa inaugurale Lo sprinter della UAE Team Emirates ha tagliato il traguardo in quinta posizione nella tappa inaugurale della centesima edizione del Giro d’Italia. Vittoria, con un colpo di mano negli ultimi 2 km, dell’austriaco Lukas Poestlberger (Bora – Hansgrohe) che ha anticipato di un soffio l’arrivo dei velocisti. Seconda posizione per Caleb Ewan (Orica – Scott) che ha preceduto nell’ordine Andre Greipel (Lotto Soudal) e Giacomo Nizzolo (Trek – Segafredo). Modolo, scattato ai 250 metri dall’arrivo ha colto un buon quinto posto nonostante un forte vento contrario.“Sono abbastanza soddisfatto del quinto posto di oggi” dice Modolo (foto Bettini) “anche se oggi era una grande opportunità per vestire la prima maglia Rosa di questa edizione speciale del Giro d’Italia. La squadra ha fatto un lavoro egregio per tenermi davanti nelle fasi cruciali dello sprint, soprattutto Marcato, con una trenata lunghissima, e Ferrari, che ha provato a lanciare uno sprint lungo per colmare il gap con Poestlberger, a cui rivolgo le mie congratulazioni perché ha realizzato una grande performance. Io mi sento bene e siamo solo all’inizio. Ci riproverò a partire da domani”. Domani la seconda frazione da Olbia a Tortolì di 221 km. Una tappa più movimentata altimetricamente rispetto a quella iniziale con tre salite prima dell’arrivo in pianura.
