The curtain was drawn on a dramatic eighth stage of the 100th Giro d’Italia on Saturday, 13 May with Valerio Conti crashing 900 metres away from the finish line taking him out of first position. UAE Team Emirates continues to rank first in Teams Classification and Jan Polanc successfully defending the Maglia Azzura for the fourth stage in a row. The 189km eighth stage through Puglia in southeast Italy was won by Gorka Izagirre (Movistar) after UAE Team Emirates rider Conti crashed on a tight corner close to the finish line.
A disheartened Conti commented, “It’s a shame. I made a mistake and I’m so sorry. I believed in the victory. Maybe I exaggerated a bit in the turn pedalling too much. Maybe I had too much adrenaline in order to get through the final few metres. I fell still attached to the pedal and lost time. I did a perfect stage in the finale the strongest breakaway riders remained in front and we were ready to fight in order to win the stage. The only thing I can say is I was feeling good and believed in the stage victory. Now I’m really sorry and disappointed. I hope there will be another occasion because I am in good shape.”
Tomorrow’s stage nine starts in Montenero di Bisaccia and is known to shakeup the overall classification. While Mount Etna was the first mountain finish of the 100th Giro d’Italia, stage nine to Blockhaus is the first brutal finish. The 152km stage is short and mostly flat but ends with the 13.6km climb to the finish line, with an gradient of 8.4 % and peak of 14%, for the final 10km.

E’ stata una tappa ad alta emozione quella disputata oggi che ha portato i corridori da Molfetta a Peschici dopo 189 km. Doveva essere una frazione da fuga numerosa e così è stato, con la prima ora corsa ad oltre 54 km/h di media, spinta dai vari tentativi. Da segnalare i corridori della UAE Team Emirates molto attivi, tra cui Mohoric a Ferrari che sono stati grandi protagonisti in diverse azioni prima di quella decisiva che ha preso il largo con Valerio Conti.Scatti e controscatti nel finale di gara tra i fuggitivi fino a quando sono rimasti solo in quattro con un Valerio Conti attivissimo fino alla curva a destra che immetteva negli ultimi 900 metri quando è scivolato perdendo l’occasione di fare sua una frazione che gli si adattava per caratteristiche e cui credeva per condizione fisica e mentale.Vittoria per lo spagnolo Izagirre Gorka (Movistar) davanti a Giovanni Visconti (Baharain-Merida) e a Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana). La classifica generale è rimasta immutata.
“Mi sentivo molto bene, volevo vincere per me e per la squadra” dice un rassegnato Valerio Conti. “Ho sbagliato io, forse troppa foga e alla fine ho sbagliato la curva. Sapevo che queste strade sono anche un po’ scivolose, quindi ho sbagliato io. Tra l’altro mi era rimasto attaccato lo scarpino al pedale e ho perso anche molto tempo per ripartire. Ho lavorato molto nella fuga e penso che anche I miei avversari avevano paura di me. Spero solo di avere un’altra occasione”.
Domani il Giro d’Italia affronterà la nona tappa, prima del secondo giorno di riposo in programma, da Montenero di Bisaccia a Blockhaus di 149 km. Tappa ondulata fino ai 13,6 km finali quando inizia la salita che, che con una pendenza media dell’8,4 % e punte fino al 14%, porta all’arrivo.
