Tappa corta, tre Gpm, dopo il giorno di riposo: ingredienti che hanno reso la 16^ frazione del Giro d'Italia, 132 km da Bressanone ad Andalo, molto intensa e selettiva.
Ancora Diego Ulissi tra i protagonisti della corsa, felice di poter contare su un'ottima condizione che gli ha consentito di rimanere fino al traguardo con i migliori uomini di classifica.
Per il corridore della LAMPRE-MERIDA, un lusinghiero 4° posto (foto Bettini), a 37" dal vincitore Valverde (2° posto per la maglia rosa Kruijswijk, con lo stesso tempo dello spagnolo, 3° Zakarin a 7") e un buon raccolto di punti che lo portano, nella graduatoria della maglia rossa, a 8 lunghezze da Nizzolo (130 punti contro 138).
Tappa affrontata di gran carriera sin dai primi chilometri, con la velocissima discesa dalla partenza verso Bolzano e con un ritmo elevato sulla prima ascesa di giornata, ovvero il Passo della Mendola, lungo la quale dieci corridori, tutti di altissimo profilo, si sono avvantaggiati sul resto del gruppo.
Il drappello dei battistrada, comprendente Ulissi, oltre a Valverde, Nibali, Kruijswijk, Zakarin, Lopez, Kangert, Firsanov, Jungels e Dombrowski, ha guadagnato circa 40" sul primo gruppetto di inseguitori, divario mantenuto immutato fino all'ultimo tratto della seconda salita del percorso, il Fai della Paganella.
Velverde, Kruijswijk e Zakarin hanno allungato dal gruppo di testa, mentre dietro di loro la situazione si rimescolava, con il cedimento di Nibali e la rimonta di Chaves. Costante il rendimento di Ulissi, bravo a tenere un ritmo di ascesa regolare e proficuo, che gli ha consentito di restare con i primi inseguitori del terzetto di testa anche sull'ultima breve salita verso Andalo e di cogliere il 4° posto.
"Al termine di una tappa resa molto impegnativa per l'atteggiamento con la quale è stata affrontata, posso dirmi soddisfatto per la mia prestazione- ha commentato Ulissi - Le salite del percorso erano ascese molto dure, da scalatori puri, ma stavo bene, mi sono difeso con buone gambe fino alla fine, raccogliendo un bel 4° posto".

Short distance, three categorized climbs, one day after the rest day: these ingredients made the 16th stage of the Giro d'Italia, 132 km from Bressanone to Andalo, very demanding and selective.
Diego Ulissi was once again one of the protagonist of the race, counting on a very good condition which allowed him to reach the arrival with the top climbers.
LAMPRE-MERIDA's athlete obtained a pleasing 4th place (photo Bettini), at 37" to the winner Valverde (who preceded Kruijswjik and, at 7", Zakarin) and collected points which helped him to reduce the gap from Nizzolo in the red jersey classification (Ulissi 130 points, Nizzolo 138).
Very fast approach to the first part of the stage, the descent from the start to Bolzano, which was covered at a high speed, and also the first climb (Passo della Mendola) was covered with a pace which selected a group of 10 top riders in front of the race.
Ulissi was one of these riders and he led the stage with Valverde, Nibali, Kruijswijk, Zakarin, Lopez, Kangert, Firsanov, Jungels and Dombrowski. The advantage of this group on the first chasers was 40" and the gap was maintained until the final part of the second ascent of the course, the Fai della Paganella.
Valverde, Kruijswijk and Zakarin attacked from the head group and they succeeded in reaching the arrival, meanwhile, behind them, the situation was unstable: Nibali was dropped, Chaveves succeeded in recovering the other contenders for the general classification and Ulissi pedaled with the first chasers of the front riders of the final climb to Andalo, obtaining the 4th place.
"I'm satisfied, I realized a good performance in a stage which was demanding and which was raced at a very high pace - Ulissi explained - The climbs were very demanding, they were suitable for pure climbers, however and I pedaled for the whole stage with the top riders, thanks to a good condition.
The fourth place is a good result".
