MAJERUS MAKES IT FIVE FOR FIVE IN LEUDELANGE

Christine Majerus has pinned on a number five times this year – and five times she’s climbed to the top step of the podium. Her latest victory in Leudelange is her third on home soil in 2017. Majerus opted out of the Telenet UCI Cyclocross World Cup in Rome to minimise travel.
“I’m happy because there was less stress, but it would have been nice to have tested my legs against a deeper field in Italy,” said Majerus. “Of course, you can’t have everything. I hope that at the end of the month, I’ll see this was the better choice for me.”
“Wins are always nice, but I don’t want to overstate my January,” Majerus added. “Otegem was a good win against some of the best. The fields weren’t as strong in the other races, but I gave my best to have a good preparation. Still a win is a win, and I’m happy to win today.”
Sunday’s victory salute was like every other this month – a solo celebration across the finish line. In Leudelange, Majerus took the lead from the start and set her focus on her rhythm and power out-put.
“The lap wasn’t that hard today,” said Majerus. “There was a little bit of melted snow that turned into a little mud, but it was nothing extreme. There were no climbs, no real running.”
“I wanted to do a good workout, so I started in front and just tried to keep the pace steady,” she added. “The girl that finished second did a great race until mid-race, staying under 20 seconds from me.”
Majerus embraced the pressure that came with the minor advantage.
“It forced me to keep the pace high,” said Majerus. “By mid-race, she slowed down a bit and the gap got bigger. I tried to finish with a good last lap although the gap had grown.”
The Luxembourgish champion will line-up for Kastelcross next Saturday and the final World Cup of the 2016/2017 season in Hoogerheide on Sunday. Nikki Brammeier will join Majerus on the start line in Hoogerheide but races Rucphen rather than Kastelcross as a prelude. |
