Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling’s Nettie Edmondson took two Gold Medals in the Oceania Track Championships at the DISC Velodrome, in Melbourne, Victoria, last week. The former World Champion was part of the Australian squad that defeated New Zealand in the final of the Team Pursuit on the first day of the Championships, on Wednesday, then took another title on Saturday when she won the first ever Madison Championship with future black and orange teammate Amy Cure.
Cure, who joins Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling, was also a part of the Australian Team Pursuit squad, and finished the Championships with three Gold Medals after taking the Omnium title on Friday.
The Oceania Championships was the first time the Australian squad had ridden together since the disappointment of their crash-marred Olympic Games in Rio, in August. The winning time of 4:25.517 was enough to beat the New Zealand team - which had finished fourth in Rio - by almost three seconds.
After sitting out the Omnium, in which she took the World title in 2015, Edmondson then teamed up with Cure again to dominate the Madison. The Australian pair, who will be teammates in January, overcame a crash to dominate the event, which is gaining importance in women’s cycling.
“It's pretty cool that we took out the inaugural Oceania women's Madison, especially now that it's been announced as a World Championship event,” Edmondson told Cycling Australia. “It's been an important goal for us and now that we've got some points for us we should be getting an Aussie team up there.”
Elsewhere, Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling’s former World Champion Giorgia Bronzini finished fourth in the three-day-long Women’s Omnium at the Amsterdam Six Days in the Netherlands capital. The Italian, who won the World Points Race title in 2009 had been on the overall podium for most of the event, which was dominated by former black and orange rider, Olympic Champion Elinor Barker.
