TOPSPORT VLAANDEREN - PRO-DUO - RIDLEY 30 September 2015 - The 2016 cycling season is coming to an end and the bigger part of our riders is taking a well-deserved break. However we will not withhold you their achievements of last month:
In Hulste the provincial championships of West-Flanders were settled. Nel De Crits scored a 6th place, which was sufficient to become the West-Flemish champion. The Swedish Emma Johannson won the race, she crossed the finish line solo with 20 seconds lead on her countrywoman Alexandra Nessmar. In the Lotto Belgium Tour the team showed a strong collective effort. The 4-day race started good for Topsport Vlaanderen-Pro-Duo-Ridley with a nice 5th and 11th place for Kelly Druyts in the first 2 stages. Thereby Kelly could keep the Best Belgian jersey for 2 days. Even in the tough last race with finish in Geraardsbergen, Kelly could stand out, but it was Steffy Van den Haute who finished first for our team. She took the 14th place. Kelly Van den Steen became 23rd and 20th in the overall ranking. After a successful Belgium Tour, the team travelled to Spain, to participate in "La Vuelta", a women’s race on the roads of the city centre of Madrid, on the last day of the men’s Vuelta. A lot of supporters followed the race broadcasted at home and saw an exciting race with lots of breakaways. The riders of team Topsport Vlaanderen-Pro-Duo-Ridley were constantly in front and took part in every breakaway. Eventually a group of 8 riders could stay away and on less than 15 kilometres of the end, among them Kelly Van den Steen. A few kilometres later also Nel De Crits and Kelly Druyts could join the front group, which implied 3 Topsport Vlaanderen-Pro Duo-Ridley riders in front. The ideal situation the position Kelly Druyts in a sprint of the leading group. But it never came to that, the peloton started to organise and approched the front group very quickly. An alert Kelly Van den Steen saw the danger coming and took her chances in a solo break. On less than 5 kilometres of the finish line, Kelly was caught and a peloton sprint took place inwhich Kelly Druyts became 8th. A very good result after a fabulous race of the hole team. While the team was in Spain, Ann-Sophie Duyck participated in the last international time trail of the season before the World Championships, IT Chrono Champenois in the French Betheny. The Belgian Champion rode the 33,4 kilometres in 46'46", good for an average of 42,851 km/h. Nineteen seconds later the Australian Tiffany Cromwell became second and the British Hayley Simmonds third on 27 seconds. 4 of our girls were selected by the Belgian coaches to participate in the World Championships in Richmond, Virginia – USA. Lenny Druyts and Eva Maria Palm in the women juniors, Ann-Sophie Duyck and Kaat Hannes in the women elites. Ann-Sophie Duyck aimed a top 8 classification in the individual time trial, which could yield her a nomination for the Olympic Games of next year in Rio de Janeiro. After a long reparation period Ann-Sophie was ready to perform … unfortunately she couldn’t take the eight place. She felt a bite sick at the start of the race and I came through in the duration of the race. She became 9th and was very disappointed. However according to the KBWB Ann-Sophie still is in the running for the Olympics. Eva Maria Palm rode the Individual time trial in the junior series. She accomplished a 27th place and was not to disappointed. For her it was already an achievement to be able to participate in the world championships, after a period of illness. Lenny Druyts and Eva-Maria went on in the women’s road race for juniors. They could however never make a difference in the finals of the race. It was too hard for them to stay in front of the race, the competitors were to strong and they kept on pushing them in the back of the peloton. Which is way Lenny and Eva Maria missed the distinctive breakaway. The American Chloé Dygert became the new world champion. Lenny Druyts finished 28th on 3'46", Eva-Maria Palm 61th on 8'27". In the Women’s elite road race all Belgian eyes were pointed on Jolien D’hoore, who had a good chance to win the Worlds with a good team beside her, including Kaat Hannes. Kaat rode a good first few rounds, but disappeared from the peloton after a crash. Elizabeth Armitstead won and became the new world Champion. The riders who were not selected for the world championships, participated to the regional races in Belgium. The team started in Wenduine with 6 riders. Kelly Druyts could win the sprint of a big front group before the French Elise Delzenne and Annelies Van Doorslaer. Nel De Crits took the 4th place. Only 1 day later team Topsport Vlaanderen-Pro-Duo-Ridley participated in Muizen-Mechelen with the same team. Demmy Druyts brought in her 5th victory of the season, she crossed the finish line first as Nathalie Verschelden and Sarah Ingelbrecht followed in her wheel. And even in the last race of the season in Berlare, Kelly Druyts managed to take the 2nd place, after working hard for the team. We are able to look back on a very nice season with 48 victories and 26 places of honour, in which lots of young talent was developed. We hope you enjoyed to see our riders battle and want to thank you sponsors and fans for all the cheers and support in the past season! Best regards Teammanager Christel Herremans |
