Lotte Kopecky wins the opening stage of Burgos, 4th consecutive Worldtour victory for Team SD Worx
"Perfect start to the second part of the season"
Lotte Kopecky returned to competition in the Vuelta a Burgos after an altitude training and a week of rest. The Belgian champion went for a stage win and was immediately successful. In Aranda De Duero she gave everyone the slip and won supremely in the sprint. "This gives confidence for what's to come."

After Demi Vollering's triple win in Itzulia, Lotte Kopecky delivered the fourth consecutive World Tour victory for Team SD Worx by winning the first stage of the Vuelta a Burgos. A nice ending to a day that did not start well. Team SD Worx had to forfeit Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio. Team manager Anna van der Breggen: "Ashleigh fell in Durango-Durango, just like Demi Vollering. Demi's evolution was positive, today she felt good again. But with Ashleigh it went the other way around. She had too much trouble cycling normally. So then it is wiser to listen to your body and not start. It was a difficult decision, because the Burgos course suits her, but there are still goals to come."
Then Team SD Worx started the flat stage to Aranda De Duero with five riders. The first stage seemed to be heading for a sprint. Spurred on by Trek-Segafredo, the peloton was put on a leash several times before breaking into pieces. Team SD Worx did not miss the right echelon and remained attentive at the front, without spilling too much energy. "We were going for Lotte today, so we waited for the sprint," sports director Anna van der Breggen explains. "Still, it got exciting for a while because there was quite a strong wind, but we managed to hold on well at the front."
"The high temperature (40 degrees) made it extra tough, but the girls ate and drank well. They put Lotte off perfectly, after which she finished it off convincingly. It is super for her to come back into competition like this. Winning like that, gives a lot of confidence."
For Lotte Kopecky it is the third victory this season, after her wins in the Strade Bianche and in the Tour of Flanders. "This is indeed the perfect start to the second part of the season. There was quite a strong crosswind, so it was difficult to stay out of the wind and save power. But I managed quite well, with Demi Vollering in my wheel in case something happened. Such an uphill sprint suits me, I knew that this stage was something for me. So I didn't hesitate. With 200 metres to go I went and managed to hold on until the end. Will I defend the leader's jersey? Tomorrow there will probably be another sprinting opportunity, so I would like to go for a second stage win in a row," she concluded.

“Perfecte start van het tweede seizoendeel”
Lotte Kopecky keerde in Vuelta a Burgos terug in competitie na een hoogtestage en een weekje rust. De Belgische kampioene ging vol voor etappewinst en schoot al meteen raak. In Aranda De Duero gaf ze iedereen het nakijken en won ze oppermachtig in de sprint. “Dat geeft vertrouwen voor wat kom.”
Na de drievoudige winst van Demi Vollering in Itzulia, tekende Lotte Kopecky voor de vierde Worldtour-winst op rij voor Team SD Worx door in de Vuelta a Burgos de eerste etappe op haar naam te schrijven. Een mooi einde van een dag die niet goed begon. Team SD Worx moest Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio forfait geven. Ploegleider Anna van der Breggen: “Ashleigh was net zoals Demi Vollering gevallen in Durango-Durango. Bij Demi verliep de evolutie positief, vandaag voelde ze zich weer goed. Maar bij Ashleigh ging het de andere kant op. Ze had te veel last om normaal te fietsen. Dus dan is het verstandiger om naar je lichaam te luisteren en niet te starten. Het was een lastig besluit, want deze koers ligt haar, maar er komen nog doelen.”
Waarna Team SD Worx met vijf rensters de vlakke rit naar Aranda De Duero aanving. Vooraf leek de eerste etappe al op een sprint uit te draaien. Onder impuls van Trek-Segafredo werd het peloton meermaals op een lint gezet waarna het in stukken uiteen brak. Team SD Worx miste de juiste waaier niet en bleef attent voorin, zonder te veel met de krachten te morsen. “We gingen voor Lotte vandaag, dus wachtten we de sprint af”, legt ploegleider Anna van der Breggen uit. “Toch werd het nog even spannend want er stond best een harde wind, maar we wisten ons goed voorin te handhaven.”
“De hoge temperatuur (40 graden) maakte het extra zwaar, maar de meiden hebben goed gegeten en gedronken. Ze zetten Lotte perfect af, waarna ze het overtuigend afmaakte. Het is super voor haar om zo terug in competitie te komen. Als je het op die manier afmaakt, dan put je daar veel vertrouwen uit.”
Voor Lotte Kopecky is het de derde zege dit seizoen, na haar winst in de Strade Bianche en in de Ronde van Vlaanderen. “Dit is inderdaad de perfecte start van het tweede deel van het seizoen. Er stond best een harde zijwind, dus het was lastig om uit de wind te blijven en zo krachten te sparen. Toch slaagde ik er best aardig in, met Demi in mijn wiel voor het geval er iets zou gebeuren. Zo’n sprint bergop ligt me, ik wist dat deze etappe iets voor mij zou zijn. Dus twijfelde ik niet. Met nog 200 meter te gaan, ging ik vol aan en ik wist het te houden tot het einde. Of ik de leiderstrui ga verdedigen? Morgen is er waarschijnlijk nog een sprintkans, dus ik zou graag voor een tweede ritzege op rij gaan”, besluit ze.”
