Lotte Kopecky rounds off team play perfectly and triumphs in Piazza del Campo
"Maybe once in a lifetime to win Strade Bianche as world champion"

Lotte Kopecky has won the Strade Bianche for the second time in her career. The world champion settled with fellow breakaway rider Elisa Longo-Borghini on the Via Santa Catarina to crown it by triumphing as world champion in the Piazza del Campo. "Very special to win here in the rainbow jersey. I didn't have my very best day, but I didn't panic. When Demi Vollering and I were in front, we were able to play the team game. Winning the Strade Bianche this way is very special," Kopecky said.

After the final gravel stretch, five riders separated from the peloton: Demi Vollering, Lotte Kopecky, the duo Elisa Longo-Borghini and Shirin van Anrooij and Kasia Niewiadoma. An acceleration by Demi Vollering threw Van Anrooij overboard. Niewiadoma responded, after which Lotte Kopecky strongly attacked. Only Elisa Longo-Borghini was able to follow. On the final climb in the streets of Siena, the Via Santa Catarina, the world champion accelerated after which she arrived solo.
Kopecky: "We had more control than last week in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. The whole team did a fantastic job. On Le Tolfe, Demi Vollering and I were in the front, which allowed us to play the team game perfectly. Demi went on, but was caught back. I was actually almost at the limit, but I had to attack. It was my turn to go."
To add honestly, "I actually didn't have the best day. I suffered the whole race. When I left this morning, I immediately felt I didn't have the best legs. But I often have that in a race and usually they don't really get worse as the race progresses. Again, my legs felt the same throughout the race. So I tried not to panic. On the Via Santa Catarina it was important not to attack too early. When I attacked, I went full speed until the last corner. Then I knew this win was in and that I could triumph in a very special way as world champion in the Piazza del Campo."
Sports manager Danny Stam was pleased with his team's performance. "This was a clever piece of team play. Where we were behind last week, this time we were present everywhere. Barbara Guarischi, Elena Cecchini, Mischa Bredewold and Niamh Fisher-Black showed excellent helpers. We found ourselves in the perfect situation with Lotte Kopecky and Demi Vollering ahead. This allowed them to attack in turn. When Lotte Kopecky was alone in front with Elisa Longo-Borghini, we were able to keep pressure from behind with Demi, forcing Longo-Borghini to keep on riding. The ideal scenario. The way Lotte won and how much surplus she had left was impressive."
Stam: "I had polled in the race how Lotte felt. 'Definitely not super, not good either, but not bad either,' she indicated. But if you then win like this... Then she just did really well. Because of the course change, the race was locked for longer. I think everyone had some trepidation about the tougher final. But in the end you do get the same strong riders at the front. This race never lies. Usually the best rider wins here."
So Team SD Worx-Protime wins the Strade Bianche for the fourth year in a row, good for seven wins out of ten editions for the Dutch team. "That is a very special statistic," agrees Stam. "This is a very nice race, where you can really make course. With Lotte Kopecky victorious in the rainbow jersey, we have another great win."

Lotte Kopecky heeft voor de tweede keer in haar carrière de Strade Bianche op haar naam geschreven. De wereldkampioene rekende op de Via Santa Catarina af met medevluchtster Elisa Longo-Borghini en zette zo de kroon op het werk door als wereldkampioene te triomferen op het Piazza del Campo. “Heel bijzonder om hier in de regenboogtrui te winnen. Ik had niet mijn allerbeste dag, maar ik panikeerde niet. Toen Demi Vollering en ik voorop zaten, konden we het ploegenspel spelen. Op deze manier de Strade Bianche winnen is heel speciaal”, aldus Kopecky.

Na de laatste grindstrook scheidden zich vijf rensters af van het peloton: Demi Vollering, Lotte Kopecky, het duo Elisa Longo-Borghini en Shirin van Anrooij en Kasia Niewiadoma. Een versnelling van Demi Vollering gooide Van Anrooij overboord. Niewiadoma reageerde, waarna Lotte Kopecky sterk demarreerde. Alleen Elisa Longo-Borghini kon volgen. Op de slotklim in de straten van Siena, de Via Santa Catarina, versnelde de wereldkampioene waarna ze solo aankwam.
Kopecky: “We hadden meer controle dan vorige week in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. Het hele team deed fantastisch werk. Op Le Tolfe zaten Demi Vollering en ik voorin, waardoor we het ploegenspel perfect konden spelen. Demi ging aan, maar werd terug gehaald. Ik zat eigenlijk al bijna op de limiet, maar ik moest demarreren. Het was mijn beurt om te gaan.”
Om er eerlijk aan toe te voegen: “Ik had eigenlijk niet de beste dag. Ik heb de hele koers afgezien. Toen ik deze morgen vertrok, voelde ik meteen dat ik niet de beste benen had. Maar dat heb ik wel vaker in een wedstrijd en meestal worden ze dan niet echt slechter naarmate de wedstrijd vordert. Ook nu voelden mijn benen de hele koers hetzelfde aan. Dus ik probeerde niet te panikeren. Op de Via Santa Catarina was het zaak om niet te vroeg aan te gaan. Bij mijn demarrage trok ik vol door tot aan de laatste bocht. Toen wist ik dat deze zege binnen was en dat ik op een heel speciale manier als wereldkampioene op het Piazza del Campo kon zegevieren.”
Sportief manager Danny Stam was tevreden met de prestatie van zijn team. “Dit was een knap staaltje ploegenspel. Waar we vorige week achter de feiten aanliepen, waren we nu wél overal present. Barbara Guarischi, Elena Cecchini, Mischa Bredewold en Niamh Fisher-Black hebben zich uitstekende helpers getoond. We kwamen in de perfecte situatie terecht met Lotte Kopecky en Demi Vollering vooruit. Zo konden zij beurtelings aanvallen. Toen Lotte Kopecky met Elisa Longo-Borghini alleen voorin zat, konden we met Demi druk van achteren uit houden, waardoor Longo-Borghini moest doorrijden. Het ideale scenario. De manier waarop Lotte won en hoeveel overschot ze nog had, was indrukwekkend.”
Stam: “Ik had in de wedstrijd gepolst hoe Lotte zich voelde. ‘Zeker niet super, ook niet goed, maar ook niet slecht’, gaf ze aan. Maar als je vervolgens op deze manier wint… Dan heeft ze het gewoon heel goed gedaan. Door de parcourswijziging zat de wedstrijd langer op slot. Ik denk dat iedereen wat schrik had voor de zwaardere finale. Maar uiteindelijk krijg je wel dezelfde sterke rensters van voren. Deze wedstrijd liegt nooit. Meestal wint hier de beste renster.”
Zo wint Team SD Worx-Protime de Strade Bianche voor het vierde jaar op rij, goed voor zeven overwinningen op tien edities voor de Nederlandse ploeg. “Dat is een heel speciale statistiek”, vindt ook Stam. “Dit is een heel mooie wedstrijd, waar je echt koers kunt maken. Met Lotte Kopecky zegevierend in de regenboogtrui hebben we er opnieuw een mooie overwinning bij.”
