Lotte Kopecky finishes 2nd in Paris-Roubaix
"Disappointment prevails"
"When you feel that there was more in it, losing hurts," said sports manager Danny Stam at the edge of the cycling track. Lotte Kopecky's second place in Paris-Roubaix is a great result. Especially since Team SD Worx again played a dominant role in the final. However, the team was not satisfied with the umpteenth nice, short result of the year.

"We were still in full control of the race, but in half a second the situation had completely changed. Suddenly we were behind and had to go full steam ahead. It was a situation that we were not able to rectify, which is why we are now disappointed," said Lotte Kopecky honestly after her second place behind Elisa Longo Borghini.
In the run-up to the infamous cobbled section of Mons-en-Pévèle, Team SD Worx took control. Chantal van den Broek-Blaak raised the tempo, Lotte Kopecky added to it. Only Marta Bastianelli and Lucinda Brand were able to respond to the acceleration. "Lucinda didn't go full speed and our goal was to put the other teams under pressure. I did my turn to keep the lead but also got the signal not to throw my strength too much."
The leading group was caught and Trek-Segafredo immediately counterattacked. Elisa Longo Borghini attacked and Elena Cecchini and Marta Cavalli tried to jump in. However, they could not keep the wheel of the Italian champion. Soon, Longo Borghini had a half-minute lead. "In no time the situation was completely turned around," said Kopecky. "We suddenly had to chase." Van den Broek-Blaak and Kopecky tried to narrow the gap, but got no cooperation from the other riders. "That's understandable because we were so dominant in all the previous races. Then you know the competition is leaving all the work to us," said Chantal van den Broek-Blaak.
Kopecky: "The teammates of Longo Borghini did a good job of hiding. We tried to ride full speed, but couldn't close the gap. That's a shame, but Elisa was also strong today."
After which Team SD Worx went full out for second place in the 2nd edition of the Hell of the North for women. "In the end, this was the highest we could achieve," said Chantal van den Broek-Blaak. "We were dead broke. I had the idea we were in the race well and that everyone was doing their thing. We had it under control, until Longo Borghini went on the attack. Actually, there was nothing wrong, but we couldn't close the gap. Then you can say she was just the strongest."
With her second place in Paris-Roubaix, Lotte Kopecky ends her spring campaign as WorldTour leader. With victories in the Strade Bianche and the Tour of Flanders and now a second place in the Hell of the North, she can look back on the first months of the season with satisfaction. Although the Belgian champion did not want to dwell on that in Roubaix. "The disappointment dominates. My legs were good and we could have held the race in our hands. Unfortunately, it was not to be today."

“Ontgoocheling overheerst”
“Als je het gevoel hebt dat er meer in had gezeten, dan doet verliezen pijn”, zei sportief manager Danny Stam aan de rand van de wielerbaan. De tweede plek van Lotte Kopecky in Parijs-Roubaix is een mooi resultaat. Zeker omdat Team SD Worx opnieuw een dominante rol in de finale vervulde. Toch stemde de zoveelste mooie, korte uitslag van het jaar niet tot tevredenheid bij de ploeg.
“We hadden de wedstrijd nog volledig in handen, maar in een halve seconde was de situatie volledig gekeerd. Ineens reden wij achter de feiten en moesten wij vol aan de bak.
Een situatie die we niet meer kregen rechtgezet, waardoor nu de ontgoocheling overheerst”, was ook Lotte Kopecky eerlijk over haar tweede plek achter Elisa Longo Borghini.
In de aanloop naar de roemruchte kasseistrook van Mons-en-Pévèle nam Team SD Worx de regie in handen. Chantal van den Broek-Blaak trok het tempo omhoog, Lotte Kopecky deed er nog een schepje bovenop. Alleen Marta Bastianelli en Lucinda Brand konden de versnelling beantwoorden. “Lucinda reed niet voluit, en ook bij ons was het vooral ons doel om de andere ploegen onder druk te zetten. Ik deed mijn beurten om de voorsprong te houden maar kreeg ook het signaal om niet te veel met mijn krachten te smijten.”
De kopgroep werd terug gehaald en Trek-Segafredo kwam meteen met een tegenaanval. Elisa Longo Borghini zette aan, waarna Elena Cecchini en Marta Cavalli probeerden mee te springen. Zij konden het wiel van de Italiaanse kampioene echter niet houden. Al snel had de Longo Borghini een voorsprong van een halve minuut. “In no-time was de situatie volledig gekeerd”, zegt Kopecky. “We moesten plots achtervolgen.” Van den Broek-Blaak en Kopecky probeerden het gat te verkleinen, maar kregen geen medewerking van de andere rensters. “Dat is ook te begrijpen omdat we in alle voorgaande wedstrijden zo dominant reden. Dan weet je dat de concurrentie al het werk aan ons overlaat”, aldus Chantal van den Broek-Blaak.
Kopecky: “Daarbij deden de ploegmaten van Longo Borghini goed afstoppingwerk. We hebben vol proberen te rijden, maar kregen het gat niet dicht. Dat is jammer, maar Elisa was ook sterk vandaag.”
Waarna Team SD Worx voluit ging voor de tweede plek in de 2e editie van de Hel van het Noorden voor vrouwen. “Uiteindelijk was dit het hoogst haalbare”, zei Chantal van den Broek-Blaak. “We zaten stikkapot. Ik had het idee dat we goed in de wedstrijd zaten en dat iedereen zijn ding deed. We hadden het onder controle, tot Longo Borghini in de aanval ging. Eigenlijk was er dan nog niets aan de hand, maar toch kregen we het gat niet dicht. Dan kan je zeggen dat zij gewoon de sterkste was.”
Lotte Kopecky eindigt met de tweede plek in Parijs-Roubaix haar voorjaar als leider van de WorldTour. Met zeges in de Strade Bianche en de Ronde van Vlaanderen en nu dus nog een tweede plaats in de Hel kan ze tevreden terugkijken op de eerste maanden van het seizoen. Al wilde de Belgische kampioene daar in Roubaix nog niet bij stil staan. “De ontgoocheling overheerst. Mijn benen waren goed en we hadden de wedstrijd in handen kunnen houden. Helaas mocht het vandaag niet zo zijn.”
