Afghan women cyclists brought to safety in Italy

We are delighted to share the following Road to Equality press release from the Association of the Italian Professional Cyclists ACCPI.

A small group of Afghan women cyclists has managed to reach Italy on board a C-130 of the Italian Air Force that landed at Fiumicino (Rome) on 27th August. Six athletes are currently observing the required quarantine, alongside a male athlete and several family members. Joy, but also concern about those who are haven’t yet been able to leave Afghanistan.

STATEMENTS

«We can’t be completely happy yet» says Alessandra Cappellotto, the first Italian woman cyclist to become world champion and head of the worldwide union of women cyclists, CPA Women, vice president of ACCPI (the Association of Professional Italian Cyclists) and president of  ASD Road To Equality.
«Of course we are happy for the women athletes we were able to rescue, but we are still extremely worried about those who are still there. The nightmare began for me and Anita Zanatta, vice president of #RoadToEquality, in the first half of August. Anita did an outstanding job with the sole goal of bringing the cyclists to safety. This has been a first step, but we really hope that all the athletes will be brought to safety through the International channels. We are yet to cross the finish line: it’s not yet time to celebrate, but this little drop of hope in the ocean of pain and suffering still means a lot». The Afghan athletes were in danger (and those who are still in the country continue to be) because they were recognisable and famous due to the national and International media coverage of their efforts for the promotion of women’s cycling.

Les cyclistes afghanes en sécurité en Italie

Nous partageons volontiers le communiqué de presse de Road to Equality que nous avons reçu de l’association des cyclistes professionnels italiens, ACCPI.

Un petit groupe de cyclistes afghanes est finalement arrivé en Italie le 27 août à bord d’un C-130 de l'Armée de l'Air qui a atterri à l'aéroport de Rome Fiumicino. Six athlètes, actuellement en quarantaine, sont accompagnées d'un représentant de l'équipe masculine et de quelques membres de leur famille. Une joie mitigée par un sentiment d’inquiétude pour les personnes qui sont encore retenues en Afghanistan.
 

DÉCLARATIONS

«Nous vivons une joie à demi» a déclaré Alessandra Cappellotto, première championne du monde italienne de cyclisme, responsable du syndicat mondial des femmes cyclistes, CPA Women, vice-présidente de l’ACCPI, l'Association des cyclistes professionnels italiens, et présidente de l'ASD Road To Equality.

«Nous éprouvons de la joie pour les jeunes filles qui ont été sauvées mais sommes en proie à l'angoisse pour celles qui vivent encore cette odyssée. Déjà à la mi-août j’étais en plein cauchemar avec la vice-présidente de #RoadToEquality Anita Zanatta, qui a accompli un travail remarquable avec pour seul objectif de sauver les cyclistes. Une première étape a été franchie même si nous espérons que toutes les athlètes, grâce aux canaux activés au niveau international, pourront être secourues. L'arrivée se fera au-delà de la ligne: le moment n’est pas encore aux célébrations mais cette goutte d'espoir dans un océan de douleur revêt une immense valeur».

Les athlètes afghanes étaient en danger (et celles qui sont restées en Afghanistan le sont toujours) en ce que reconnaissables et "célèbres" du fait de leur exposition médiatique au niveau national et international pour avoir participé à des activités de promotion du cyclisme pour les femmes.

Le cicliste afgane sono in salvo in Italia 

Riceviamo e volentieri condividiamo dall'Assocorridori Italiana il seguente comunicato stampa di Road to Equality.

Un piccolo gruppo di cicliste afgane è finalmente giunto in Italia lo scorso 27 agosto, trasportate da un C-130 dell’Aeronautica militare atterrato a Fiumicino. Sei atlete stanno svolgendo il periodo di quarantena. Insieme a loro, un atleta della formazione maschile e alcuni familiari. Gioia a metà, soffocata dalla preoccupazione per chi è ancora bloccato in Afghanistan.

DICHIARAZIONI

«Stiamo vivendo una gioia a metà» afferma Alessandra Cappellotto, prima ciclista italiana campionessa del mondo, responsabile del sindacato mondiale delle cicliste CPA Women, vicepresidente dell'Associazione Corridori Ciclisti Professionisti Italiani (ACCPI) e presidentessa della ASD Road To Equality.
«C’è la gioia per le ragazze messe in salvo, ma anche l'angoscia per quelle che sono ancora nel pieno dell'odissea. Non era ancora Ferragosto quando mi sono ritrovata catapultata in quest'incubo insieme alla vicepresidente di #RoadToEquality Anita Zanatta, che ha svolto un lavoro encomiabile, con il solo obiettivo che le cicliste potessero essere salvate. Un primo passo è stato fatto, ma ci auguriamo che tutte le atlete, tramite i canali attivati a livello internazionale, possano essere tratte in salvo. L’arrivo è dopo la riga: non è ancora il momento di festeggiare, ma questa goccia di speranza in un mare di dolore ha un valore immenso».
Le atlete afgane erano in pericolo (e chi è rimasto in Afghanistan continua a esserlo) perché riconoscibili e “famose”, per l’esposizione mediatica che avevano ricevuto a livello nazionale e internazionale, avendo partecipato ad attività di promozione del ciclismo a favore delle donne.
