Emma White Sprints to Victory, Overall Lead at North Star Grand Prix

Rally Cycling Dominates Opening Day, Leads Men's and Women's Events
Emma White showed her tremendous speed to take victory in the stage two Grand Avenue Criterium at the North Star Grand Prix. Out of the final corner, White outkicked Marlies Mejias Garcia (Weber Shimano Ladies Power) and Ellen Noble (Colavita/Bianchi USA) to claim her second UCI win of the season. Rally Cycling now holds the overall lead in both the men’s and women’s races at the North Star Grand Prix after McNulty took the overall lead in the men’s race with a blistering ride in morning’s opening time trial. Several crashes in both events caused havoc in the field on the fast four-corner course, fortunately all Rally Cycling riders managed to come through the night unscathed.

"The entire race was about being safe and staying near the front,” said White. “In the last few laps, the team came together and organized our lead out train. Sara Bergen took us into the final lap, and then Allison Beveridge took me through the last corner. From there it was a drag race to the line. It was a tremendous team effort and sets us up well for the rest of the week.”

White dominated the final sprint, thanks in part to a near perfect lead out from her teammates. The stage victory also moved her into the overall lead. White now holds the yellow jersey of overall leader and the white jersey as leader of the Best Young Rider competition. Erica Allar came home in fifth. Rally Cycling, and especially Allar were active through the race, challenging for sprint points and time bonuses. Thanks to these mid-race point sprints and her top five finish Allar moved into the lead of the sprint competition.

The men of Rally Cycling kept control of the peloton throughout the evening, which saw the race neutralized twice due to crashes. The second neutralization took place with just two laps remaining. To avoid more chaos, the officials added an extra two laps, giving the riders a total of four laps to contest the finale. At the line, National Criterium Champion Brad Huff worked his way up to sixth while race leader Brandon McNulty focused on coming home safe and maintaining his overall lead. 
 
With everyone focused on staying upright, few noticed Colin Joyce quietly moving up the general classification by collecting a series of time bonuses throughout the night. Joyce now sits second overall, six seconds behind McNulty. Evan Huffman is in third place, a sweep of the general classification podium for the Rally Cycling men.

“The team was great and made sure I was where I needed to be in the peloton,” said McNulty. “In the last couple of laps there was a big crash, and the race was neutralized. After the restart, I knew the final laps were going to be chaotic, so I backed off to make sure I kept the jersey going into the road race on Thursday.”
 
The North Star Grand Prix continues on Thursday with the Cannon Falls Road Race. Rally Cycling will look to defend their overall leads and take out the stage victories. Last year, Huffman used the 104-kilometer stage to lay the foundation for his overall victory with a bold solo move to take the stage and the leader’s yellow jersey.
