REPORT: Demi Vollering opens Itzulia with a win and the leader's jersey
"What a cool race"
Itzulia Women heralded the start of the second part of the season. The multi-day stage race began with a difficult opening stage, which was convincingly won by Demi Vollering. The Dutch rider was always to be seen at the front in the decisive moments of the race. She finished it off in an uphill sprint after a breakaway with Pauliena Rooijakkers and Kristen Faulkner. "This finish suited me, this gives a very good feeling," Vollering said in an initial reaction.

The opening stage of Itzulia Basque Country promised to be tricky with the necessary altitude metres on Mirador de Rivas and Herrera half way through the race. No wonder the riders took a wait-and-see approach at first. The long breakaway got caught on these climbs and Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio and Demi Vollering decided to get ahead in the descent of the Herrera, together with Lucinda Brand and Elise Chabbey.
"Our tactic was to check what the rest of the pack was up to in the early stages. We are only four riders from Team SD Worx, so we couldn't attack all the time and had to choose our moments. We tried to get away, but there was a lot of headwind," Demi Vollering explains. "From the Herrera the race broke completely open and there were many attack attempts. In the descent, Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio and I managed to create a gap together with two other riders, but unfortunately our breakaway didn't make it to the final despite a half-minute lead."
At 20 kilometres from the end everything came together again and Kristen Faulkner managed to get away. Only Demi Vollering and Pauliena Rooijakkers were able to catch up, after which they worked well together and the leading group built a 41-second lead on the peloton. "The cooperation went smoothly. With Pauliena it is nice to set up a breakaway, she always takes her part in riding as well. I expected her to try to make it harder with a long sprint, but I just kept my cool. Luckily I was able to answer her acceleration right away."
Vollering then went full speed ahead on the steep section up to 20%. "The finish line suited me perfectly. This is a cool race, it's really tough, but that's what I like. That I am now even more of a favourite for the overall victory? That doesn't matter to me. I am looking forward to wearing the leader's jersey tomorrow. We are here with a small team, but it is a very strong team with strong climbers. So I'm looking forward to the rest," concludes Vollering, who hit the mark for her second victory this season after her win in the Brabantse Pijl and podium finishes in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Amstel Gold Race, Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
Niamh Fisher-Black leads the youth ranking in Itzulia Women
The results of the race show that the team was up and running in the first stage of Itzulia Women. With winner Demi Vollering, Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (6th) and Niamh Fisher-Black (10th), three of the four riders finished in the top ten. Anna Shackley finished a hard day's work in 27th place. Fisher-Black underlined Team SD Worx's dominance in the opening stage by claiming the junior jersey. "This shows how strong we were today. This was the perfect day for our team," said the New Zealand rider. "I didn't expect to take the youth jersey on the first day, but it's always nice to have a goal in the bunch sprint. We started very well at Itzulia and we want to finish well too. There are two tough days ahead of us, but as a climber I am really looking forward to it. Bring it on."

“Wat een gave race"
Itzulia Women luidde de start van het tweede gedeelte van het seizoen in. De meerdaagse etappewedstrijd begon met een lastige openingsrit, die overtuigend werd gewonnen door Demi Vollering. De Nederlandse was de hele wedstrijd voorin te zien en werkte het na een vlucht met Pauliena Rooijakkers en Kristen Faulkner koelbloedig af in een sprint bergop. “Deze finish lag me, dit geeft een heel goed gevoel”, zei Vollering in een eerste reactie.
De openingsrit van Itzulia Basque Country beloofde lastig te worden met de nodige hoogtemeters op Mirador de Rivas en Herrera halfweg koers. Geen wonder dat er eerst afwachtend werd gekoerst. De lange vlucht sneuvelde op bovengenoemde beklimmingen, waarna Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio en Demi Vollering in de afdaling van de Herrera voor de vlucht vooruit kozen, samen met Lucinda Brand en Elise Chabbey.
“Onze tactiek was om in de beginfase vooral af te toetsen wat de rest van het peloton van plan was. We zijn hier immers slechts met vier rensters van Team SD Worx, we konden dus niet continu aanvallen en moesten onze momenten uitkiezen. We probeerden wel weg te raken, maar er stond veel tegenwind”, legt Demi Vollering uit. “Vanaf de Herrera brak de wedstrijd volledig open en waren er veel aanvalspogingen. In de afdaling sloegen Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio en ik erin om samen met twee andere rensters een kloof te slaan, maar helaas droeg onze vlucht ondanks een voorsprong van een halve minuut niet tot de finale.”
Op 20 kilometer van het einde kwam alles opnieuw samen, waarna Kristen Faulkner wist weg te rijden. Alleen Demi Vollering en Pauliena Rooijakkers konden nog de aansluiting maken, waarna er goed werd samen gewerkt en de kopgroep een voorsprong van 41 seconden uitbouwde op het peloton. “De samenwerking verliep vlot. Met Pauliena is het fijn om een ontsnapping op te zetten, ze draait altijd goed mee. Ik had verwacht dat ze er een lange sprint van zou proberen maken om het extra lastig te maken, maar ik hield het hoofd net cool. Gelukkig wist ik haar versnelling meteen te beantwoorden.”
Op de steile strook tot 20% trok Vollering vervolgens vol door. “De finish lag me perfect. Dit is een gave wedstrijd, het is echt lastig, maar dat vind ik net cool. Dat ik nu nog meer favoriet ben voor de eindzege? Dat maakt me niet uit. Ik kijk ernaar uit om de leiderstrui morgen te dragen. We zijn hier met een klein team, maar het is vooral een ijzersterke ploeg met stuk voor stuk sterke klimmers. Ik kijk dus al uit naar het vervolg”, besluit Vollering, die na haar winst in de Brabantse Pijl en podiumplaatsen in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Amstel Gold Race, Flèche Wallonne en Liège-Bastogne-Liège nu voor de tweede keer raak schiet dit seizoen.
Niamh Fisher-Black beste jongere in Itzulia Basque Country
Dat het team er stond, blijkt trouwens uit de wedstrijduitslag. Met winnares Demi Vollering, Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (6de) en Niamh Fisher-Black (10de) eindigden drie van de vier rensters in de top tien. Anna Shackley finishte na een dag vol arbeid knap 27ste. Fisher-Black onderstreepte de dominantie van Team SD Worx in de openingsrit door de jongerentrui op te eisen. “Dit toont hoe sterk we vandaag waren. Dit was de perfecte dag voor ons team”, zegt de Nieuw-Zeelandse. “Ik had niet verwacht om de jongerentrui op de eerste dag te nemen, maar het is altijd mooi om een doel te hebben in de groepsspurt van het peloton. We zijn heel goed gestart aan Itzulia en we willen ook goed eindigen. Er liggen twee zware dagen voor ons, maar als klimmer kijk ik er enorm naar uit. Laat maar komen.”
