Daria Shmeleva and Anastasia Voinova - first place in the women's team sprint at the 2016 UCI Track Cycling World Championships
Two riders of "Gazprom - RusVelo" team Daria Shmeleva and Anastasia Voinova, who performed as a part of the Russian national team, won first place in the women's team sprint at the 2016 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in London. Thus, athletes have brought Russia the first gold medals in the competition.
Riders posted the time of 32.679. The second was the Chinese team who got the technical defeat due to an illegal change; the third was the team of Germany.
Despite the problems at the start, in a bitter duel with Chinese athletes, who holds the world record in this discipline, Daria and Anastasia showed character and skill and were able to come out victorious. Brilliant starting stride of Daria Shmeleva allowed making a great speed on the second lap. It is worth noting, that these two teams met a year ago, and then Russian athletes took silver.
Coach of the Russian cycling team Vladimir Kiriltsev was very happy for Anastasia Voinova and Daria Shmeleva: "To begin with, when we stepped out on the floor of the velodrome, I was sure that we would win a medal. At the outset we were ready for the second place, because Anastasia had a small problem with her foot and couldn't train at full pace, but when we came second in qualifications, - I realized: only victory! So much work were done, we have to win. However, Daria had taken a tumble following a false started after struggling to get out of her gate, and honestly I was afraid that she had lost winning mindset. I saw, that she had cautiously gone on to re-start, but everything went fine. I have every reason to be satisfied with the result. I would like to thank all our supporters, we deserved to win tonight. We still have some force margin, we tested ourselves before the Olympics, our next race is in Rio, and I'm sure we'll show a good result. "
