Volta a Catalunya showed immediately that the courses profiles are quite demanding.
Along the 178,9 km of the opening stage, with start and finish in Calella, the riders covered 6 categorized climbs, with 4 ascents piled in the central part of the course, with the clou of the Col de Formic (1st cagegory) at -53 km to the arrival.
The main interest for UAE Team Emirates (photo @ElMaillot_, the team on the stage before the start) for today was the return to races of a trio of important riders, who are Darwin Atapuma, Louis Meintjes and Anass Ait el Abdia.
The Colombian climber has not raced with the team for two months, since the crash which forced him to quit the Volta a San Juan. One month ago he participated in the Colombian championship (he was 4th), today he has worn the UAE Team Emirates for the first time in a World Tour race.
For Meintjes, the opening stage of the Volta a Catalunya was the 12th day in races: after having completed the Abu Dhabi Tour, he trained for a month to be ready for the European appointments.
Last appearance of Moroccan champion Ait el Abdia was the Tour of Oman, which was also the only one competition in which he raced with the team. He get back to races after having trained at home.
For what concerns the Spanish race, despite the series of climbs, the sprinters' teams worked in order to promote a sprint epilogue, controlling that breakaways which led the race (first breakaway of 4 riders - Rolland, Antonio Nibali, Affonso and Nazaret - with a maximum advantage of 2'35", later other 2 attackers - Domont and Bol - with less than 1').
The final sprint was unfolded on large roads, where the riders could exploit their power: Cimolai preceded Bouhanni and Sbaragli.
UAE Team Emirates could not rely on pure sprinters, however Conti succeeded in giving to the team a top 20: the Italian young gun is a climber, but he's swift and he succeeded in obtaining the 20th place.
Sports director Maini commented: "It's a pity that Mori could not take part in the sprint beause of a flat tyre, he was aware that Cimolai could have been very competitive and his idea was to follow the former team mate: he would have had good chances to obtain an interesting result.
We're happy that the race unfolded in a way which was good for Atapuma, Meintjes and Ait el Abdia: the pace was regular and pretty high, the perfect conditions for having good feedbacks from the legs in the first race after some weeks.
Good to see that Bono, who was involved in a crash in the Paris-Nice which had forced him to quit the race, recovered properly".
In the second stage, the riders will race a team time trial of 41,3 km in Banyoles. The first part of the course will be hilly and on winding roads, the second part will be suitable for riding at high speed.

Già dalla prima frazione, la Volta a Catalunya si è presentata come una corsa dell'alto coefficiente di difficoltà, almeno per quanto concerne il lato altimetrico.
I 178,9 km della tappa inaugurale, con partenza e arrivo a Calella, hanno proposto ben 6 Gpm, con 4 salite concentrate nella parte centrale del percorso, con il clou del Col de Formic (1^categoria) a - 53 km dal traguardo.
Per l'UAE Team Emirates (foto @ElMaillot_, la squdra schierata sul palco alla partenza), le notizie di giornata erano rappresentate dal rientro alle corse di tre importanti atleti: Darwin Atapuma, Louis Meintjes e Anass Ait el Abdia.
Lo scalatore colombiano ha potuto riattaccare il numero di gara sul dorso della maglia dell'UAE Team Emirates a quasi due mesi dalla caduta che lo ha costretto ad abbandonare la Vuelta de San Juan. Dopo essersi misurato con il campionato nazionale (4° posto ottenuto il 26 febbraio), Atapuma ha oggi debuttato in una gara World Tour con la sua nuova squadra.
Per Meintjes, la tappa inaugurale della Volta a Catalunya è stato il 12° giorno stagionale di corsa: dopo l'Abu Dhabi Tour, lo scalatore sudafricano si è concentrato in specifici allenamenti.
Ha iniziato la seconda gara stagionale Ait el Abdia, dopo il convincente esordio con il team nel Tour of Oman e un periodo dedicato agli allenamenti.
Per quanto riguarda la cronaca della gara, nonostante la serie di salite, le squadre dei velocisti hanno lavorato per favorire un epilogo in volata, controllando le fughe che si sono alternate in testa alla corsa (prima un'azione di 4 uomini - Rolland, Antonio Nibali, Affonso e Nazart - con 2'35" come massimo margine, poi il duo di attaccanti Domont e Bol con un vantaggio inferiore al minuto).
Conclusione allo sprint, disputato su strade ampie che hanno consentito ai corridori di esprimere tutta la loro potenza: successo per Cimolai su Bohanni e Sbaragli.
Priva di velocisti puri, la formazione diretta dal duo Maini-Vicino è stata comunque rappresentata nelle fasi finali da Valerio Conti: lo scalatore romano è atleta coraggioso e svelto ha saputo sostituire l'atleta designato a prendere parte allo sprint, ovvero Manuele Mori, rimasto però attardato da una foratura ai -10 km.
Conti, muovendosi bene in gruppo, ha tagliato il traguardo in 20^posizione.
Il ds Maini ha così commentato la giornata: "Siamo dispiaciuti per Mori, perché aveva già battezzato la ruota di Cimolai e avrebbe potuto completare una bella volata. Purtroppo una foratura ha stroncato sul nascere ogni velleità.
Per come si è sviluppata, la tappa è stata perfetta per il rientro alle corse di Atapuma, Meintjes e Ait el Abdia: andatura regolare e mediamente sostenuta, l'ideale per ritrovare il ritmo di gara.
Siamo contenti di aver visto che anche Bono, ritiratosi alla Parigi-Nizza dopo una caduta, ha superato ogni problema".
La seconda tappa proporrà una cronosquadra di 43,1 km a Banyoles: dopo una prima parte collinare su strade tortuose, il percorso diventerà maggiormente favorevole per chi saprà esprimere potenza.
